I’m honestly honored (and quite excited!) to have written some additional music for this special series.

Premiering on @netflix may 17th and produced by @highergroundmedia and @concordiastudio, WORKING follows Barack Obama as he talks to modern America workers across industries and class, exploring the questions of what makes a job a good one, and how the nature of work is changing in our ever-complex world. The series is inspired by a classic 1974 nonfiction work of the same name by Studs Terkel. Told through oral history, the book chronicled everyday Americans of the era, their jobs and how their work impacted their lives. In the nearly 50 years since Working was published, American workers have faced explosive changes in the way they work, all in the face of increasing inequality.

Had a ton of fun writing some additional music for this game and playing some waldzither on @josh_mallard ‘s excellent score. The team at Big Distraction has built something really special. Really enjoyed playing these shows with my group @_kennebec last fall! Such a blast. I dream of continuing getting to work in creative modes like this - expressing a unique and adventurous voice as a soundtrack composer - and nothing like collaborating with great musicians and creatives of all stripes along the way.. by @eric_phillips_music

Sharing this little showcase of some music recorded with the Moscow Bowtie Symphony for 12 Mighty Orphans (Luke Wilson, Robert Sheen, Martin Duvall) a few years back. I had a student of mine help me sync up some of the sheet music which is a little rough around the edges but I do enjoy some of the music quite a bit still! This was a pleasure to work on. We had the sessions remotely from midnight til 7AM for a few days in a row due to the time change. Wild times! Very fun.

This is a tune called “Not an Easy Thing” for @janhaaken ‘s old documentary Our Bodies Our Doctors. I dug this up from many years back - it was the first feature doc I scored actually, and went on to win best doc feature at Portland International Film Festival. I always liked the tune but in hindsight I had some to learn about producing / mixing still at the time.. but most importantly the doc had a really beautiful soul to it. To be honest at the time I naively didn’t think overturning roe was possible or likely, seems jan has a psychic way of knowing what’s important to talk about..

“Our Bodies Our Doctors” tells the story of a rebellion in the field of medicine as a cohort of physicians faces abortion stigma within their own profession and confronts religious control over health care decisions. Their fight takes them into a larger struggle over the heart and soul of American medicine.

It was not very long after the passage of Roe v Wade in 1973 that abortion clinics and doctors came under attack by anti-abortion activists. With clinic bombings, death threats, and harassment targeting providers and their families, it appeared by the 1990s that few doctors were willing to provide this service. But beneath the surface, a quiet rebellion was taking place in the field of medicine. A number of doctors came out publicly as abortion providers, even as the larger medical community often viewed them as “rogue physicians.” This rebellion depended heavily on working with women’s freestanding clinics and their feminist allies. “Our Bodies Our Doctors” takes viewers into the lives of these providers and their struggles to provide abortion procedures. It explores the importance of settings founded on feminist principles and their profound impact on models of patient care in mainstream medicine.”
