WOW so it’s been quite a week... I literally cannot believe I’m saying this: my poem, “Migrant Worker Love Letter” is the first place winner of the C.D. Wright Emerging Poet’s prize! The work will be in the thirteenth issue of The Arkansas International.

Here is my favorite line from this piece. I spend a lot of time thinking about the idea of home and belonging; trying to find it, maintain it, how to build it from nothing. The desire for home and community is what truly connects us all as humans, and whenever I become frustrated with what divides us, I try to remind myself of what unites us all. I am so, so excited to share this piece with the world.

Thank you @thearkint and @pswordwoman for handling my words with such care. ❤️ by @ericadoingthings

✨ Erica Hom ✍🏽 @ericadoingthings
As a writer, I am interested in using poetry as a medium to further investigate the dualities, contradictions, and multiplicities of Filipina American identity.

What spaces are women of color permitted to occupy? How does the trauma of migration physically manifest in the body, long after a nation’s borders have been crossed? How is it passed down through generations, and how do women in particular bear the burden? What do we inherit from a colonial history of violence?

Drawing heavily upon traditions of magical realism and pre-colonial Philippine philosophy, I aim to confront these questions and help marginalized communities gain access to power through storytelling. It is my hope to reverse the traditional erasure of brown, immigrant women from creative, academic, and political spheres through art, writing, and community building.

A visual piece that represents the minefield of sexual harassment, fetishization and dehumanization that AAPI women face while searching for romantic partners. Each square in the piece represents a true phrase that has been said to the poet, or a situation the poet has previously encountered.

Lisboa 💗 this little poet has fallen in love with you, the sea glass that makes your shoreline shine, buildings gilded in ancient tile art, the winding corridors where I got lost as many times as I was found.

Shedding happy tears thinking about this week and all of my new friends as fado plays in the background. 💕 by @ericadoingthings

I am raising funds for my student, whose husband is currently in ICE detention. She has three young children, and has spent all of her savings on a lawyer to represent her husband. These funds help her with legal fees and rent for the month of July. Thank you! Anything helps. Please share widely 💗
