No gold bars here. Just something that can be even more valuable during a Maine winter.

Meet the Downeast Wood Bank, a volunteer-run nonprofit in Surry, Maine, that provides FREE firewood to local families struggling to heat their homes.

Think of it like a food bank, but for firewood.

Volunteers spend their time cutting, splitting, stacking, and seasoning wood so their neighbors can stay warm when temperatures drop.

It’s a pretty incredible example of a community taking care of its own! by @ericroyphd

This is a true story

Entrepreneurship is completely wild.

The email notification that @hydroviv’s episode was selected to air on @sharktankabc went to SPAM, and I found it on April 1, 2019.

Because we had launched an April Fools product (a filter for your toilet) … I didn’t think the team wouldn’t believe the news so I had to arrange a late night call to tell them.

Air date was April 14.

Prepping was 2 weeks of complete chaos, as were the 2 weeks after airing, but we got it done (my parents actually flew into DC to help with manufacturing) by @ericroyphd

5th grade is a tougher audience than scientists, college students & journalists.

I said what I said.

The year was #2016

@hydroviv started the year building water filters in my apartment & donating them to families in Flint. That summer, started setting up booths on the #washingtondc farmers market scene, and I was delivering filters by bike.

💧 Want to cut lead in your water? Here’s the cost:

🆓 Free: Only drink water from cold side of faucet
✅ Almost free: Let the tap run 30–60 sec before using
💲Cost Effective & Convenient: Get a certified filter (look for NSF/ANSI 53 for lead).
💲💲💲 High cost: Replace old plumbing or service lines for a permanent fix.

⚠️ Remember: there’s no safe level of lead — every step down this ladder reduces risk.

PFAS (or forever chemicals) are linked to all kinds of heath problems, and drinking water is one of the primary ways that people get exposed.

PFAS Testing: To test your home’s water for PFAS, you need to use an accredited laboratory. Things like water testing probes and test strips are not the right tool for the job.

Water Filtration: The key thing to look for here are for products that carry NSF/ANSI Certifications for the chemicals you are looking to protect against. In the case of forever chemicals, it’s not enough to select a product that carries these certifications for lead or chlorine… you really need to make sure that carry certifications for PFAS and/or PFOA/PFOS

Feel free to drop a DM if you have any further questions!

PSA: Tell your childrens’ schools to flush out the pipes before students and teachers go back to make sure the water is safe to drink!
