We ask schools to be transparent. We should be willing to be present.One of the most impactful things you can do as a parent this school year isn’t buying more school supplies or volunteering at one more event—it’s attending a school board meeting.As someone who serves on a school board and as a parent, I’ve seen firsthand that many of the biggest decisions affecting our children happen in those rooms. Budgets. Curriculum. Student support. Staffing. Vision.You don’t have to agree with every decision. You don’t even have to speak.Just show up.An informed parent is a powerful advocate, and strong schools are built when families understand not just what decisions are made, but how they’re made.🎯 My challenge: Attend one school board meeting this school year. There’s a difference between having a curriculum and having a plan for how that curriculum comes to life.This week we partnered with the incredible team at Sankofa Montessori to facilitate Scope & Sequence Planning as they prepare for the school year ahead. Together, we worked to ensure teachers weren’t just looking at what to teach—but when, why, and how it all connects across the first nine weeks of instruction.Our planning focused on:✨ Prioritizing standards✨ Aligning curriculum to pacing✨ Identifying critical learning experiences✨ Creating a shared vision for high-quality Tier 1 instructionStrong instruction starts long before students walk through the doors.
