High Marsh Road is out today, in @knittymag First Fall 2026!

@knittymag is a such a great publication. And it’s free for knitters! Go check out my pattern and the other lovelies in this issue, then go for a ramble through the archives.

So many thanks to @kateatherleyknits for tech-editing my first brioche pattern. She used High Marsh Road as an example in her Knitty column. If you’ve ever found brioche charts a bit overwhelming, Kate has a simplified chart style that might suit your brain better as well.

If I roll up my scarf in @mossnap__yarnworks yarn, it becomes a tree sculpture. New scarf storage plan, yep yep.

This is my modified Fiber Artist shawl by @kaceyknits - beautiful striped fabric where some stripes are the yarn held together and others shine on their own. The scarf ends up having the most beautiful texture and was perfect for handspun.

Phew! Finished a Merino/ silk fingering sample with one day to spare before @atlanticyarnfibre Festival! You can squish it at the Shediac Arena on June 13 or 14.

This is the Aperture Shawl by @ambahobrien in size small, with the last lace section extended to use up most of a skein. It’s a well-written pattern with both text and chart options.

We think this shawl would be also be great in an Alpaca/ silk/ linen fingering or Merino fingering gradient….

My friend @mossnap__yarnworks spins the colours she finds in the forest. Her handspun yarn beautifully captures the interplay between light and texture in our woods. If you look closely at the mosses, mushrooms, and decaying leaves, you might be surprised to see pink or weird neutral purples….

I love the fabric created by @kaceyknits in her Fibre Artist Shawl. It plays with stripes and combining yarns in a really clever way. The way the light passes through some of the stripes has the woodsy effect I wanted for this yarn. Check out Kacey’s free pattern (and her paid ones too!) - it’s so good.

I only had a little bit of handspun, so I sat down with the book Custom Shawls for the Curious and Creative Knitter by @indigodragonfly and @kateatherleyknits to figure out how I could maximize length with the fabric designed by @kaceyknits in the Fibre Artist Shawl.

🍂 Instead of a deep asymmetrical triangle, I made a shallow symmetrical triangle. I only increased on row 3 in colour A. When I had used up half the handspun, I started working decreases on row 3 in colour A.

🪾The @mossnap__yarnworks yarn was DK weight, and the shawl was written for fingering weight. I increased the needle size to 6.00 mm

🍁 My yarn A was actually two yarns held together: Rustic Heather Sport & Marsh Mohair by @lichenandlace in Black Walnut.

I’m so delighted with what I made with this special yarn! And it has the intellectual and colour contributions of so many great people:

My May socks are filling a gap in my rainbow of socks! These socks are going to be a pop of colour on gray and rainy days. Or any day, really, because I love this yarn.

@alleycatyarns Ontario Sock is 75% Dorset sheep wool and 25% adult mohair. It is spun by @wavefibremill from Ontario fibre.

This yarn has a beautiful sheen and a consistent 3-ply structure. If you’ve been looking for Canadian wool, I recommend this one! It’s certified by @cdnwool - where you can find other Canadian fibre connections.

Marit’s (much belated) birthday sweater from Elizabeth is Soft Trails by @feller.carol in @gobsmackedyarn Finn Cross.

Soft Trails combines lace with a relaxed sporty drop-shoulder shape. It’s warm but lightweight. The pattern description and photos have a dog in them. We could so easily imagine Marit wearing it on some soft trails with our dear Fennel.

Finn Cross is 100% untreated wool (Finnsheep x Rambouillet)
Source: Linc Farms, Nova Scotia @lincfarm
Spun: Taproot, Nova Scotia @taprootfibrelab
Dyed by Marit @gobsmackedyarn in Sackville, New Brunswick
Certified by @cdnwool

Marit’s sweater is size 3 (chest measurement: 40”, finished size: 47”). Elizabeth used less than 3 skeins of Finn Cross for Marit’s sweater.

Soft Trails is size inclusive, with 10 sizes, going up to finished chest measurement of 68.75” for a 61.75” chest. Thanks @feller.carol for this great design! I finished a second sample for my Scotch Cove pattern (free in @knittymag Winter 2025)! The @indigodragonfly tonal and @gobsmackedyarn gradient blended together beautifully at one end. Check out the knitalong on the @indigodragonfly Discord to see some other pairings that looks like twinkle lights and pure happiness.

I’m sharing full details here for folks who aren’t able to look at Ravelry for additional project info.

Yarns: @indigodragonfly CaribouBaa and @gobsmackedyarn Four Quarter gradient
Needle size: 3.25 mm
Size: 9.5” wide x 68” long (advice on how to change the stitch count to get close to original design measurements of 8.75” x 73” below)

This project:
CaribouBaa and Four Quarter are super sleek and smooth 4-ply fingering weight yarns. The Four Quarter came out of my yarn stash - it isn’t currently in the @gobsmackedyarn yarn lineup. But I know lots of folks have some in stash! I like the fabric this yarn makes on 3.25 mm needles. The original design uses 3.75 mm needles for the plumper @gobsmackedyarn Merino Fingering.

Gauge after blocking for this project:
22.5 sts /53 rows over 4”

I cast on the same number of stitches as in the design, but since the gauge is different my scarf was shorter in length and wider. To make a scarf the same size as the design, I’d need to increase the stitch count from 385 to 415. The pattern needs to be a multiple of 6, plus 1.

Swatching the stitch pattern over 37 stitches on the needles you like with your yarn is a good idea for this pattern.

I’m super happy with this version of the scarf! The colours are so beautiful! The scarf is shown in a slightly rumpled flat lay. The textured pattern has a high contrast between yellow and blue green stripes at one edge, fading into a blue-green at the other edge. by @estregger

I mended my favourite shirt as part of the Winter of Care and Repair project started by @thepeoplesmending

This is a @zurikenya shirt and it has been my favourite for a few years. Looking back through my camera roll, I can see that I often wear it on good days: to see @cris_derksen in concert, visit the @owensartgallery with my love, and for every family visit. It’s bright and bold and almost plaid. The fabric and cut feel good.

I tore one of the side vents. I think I got stuck in a door…. And the other got a bit distressed by my habit of getting caught up in my shirt when pushing off a chair. Good reason to do some hands-free chair sit exercises!

So, definitely needed mending. I used some mending strategies suggested in Mend & Patch by @kerstin.neumuller and am very happy with the results.

Other winter of care and repair activities over the past couple of weeks:
- hand-stitching sessions on the quilt binding project
- made progress on room reorganization
- washed and blocked 3 knits
- sewed in ends on 2 knitting projects
- frogged a hat I wasn’t going to finish
- fixed snags in another sweater
- worked on LaTeX template for knitting patterns
- hosted knitting group at our house
- met @jaclynmclean for long-distance making
- started rowing again after recovering from being sick

I’m definitely feeling like I have less time and energy for care and repair as I return to work. But even 10 minutes on some of these projects feels good. by @estregger

@yarnharlot has a tradition of pulling sock yarn out of her stash for a Self-Imposed Sock Club. I love this intention, but I’m quite distractable!

My 2025 socks were a mix of stash yarns and new yarn. I pulled some amazing skeins of @murkydepthsdyes @thirdvaultyarns @indigodragonflystudio and @akara.rose yarn out of my stash and knit them last year. I also knit with some new yarn, including @indigodragonflystudio Good Trouble Sock, @gobsmackedyarn and @botanicalfibres

Two pairs of these socks were samples at the Gobsmacked store last year. I’ve brought them home to add to my sock drawer, and will replace them with new samples for 2026.

This year I’m going to attempt a mix of socks and hand socks (aka fingerless mittens) because my hands are cold!

Here are the designers and dyers who kept my fingers busy and my feet warm in 2025:

Giant rainbow cape! When I saw Helen Stewart’s Anthology Throw, inspiration struck. Start with a sunny yellow with a purple circle for intersex folks! Center marginalized queer people! Work through a rainbow! Repeat black, brown, and trans Pride for good measure.

We took these pictures at Gobsmacked, where the colour magic happens. This shawl will be at the @gobsmackedyarn store and yarn shows sometimes, but is also going to be my Pride apparel for years to come. It’s an amazing blanket fort that can be worn so many ways.

To make something similar, you’d need a 12-miniskein rainbow, and 12 more minis: 1 yellow, 2 black, 2 brown, 2 pink, 2 blue, and 3 white. It ends up being the equivalent of 4.8 100g skeins. Epic!

Thank you to the @fastenoffyal team for hosting another knitalong with a focus on accessibility and indie designers.

I finished this Equilibria hat by @woollywormhead and wrapped it up for Marit. This was my first time learning Woolly’s technique for balancing short rows. We have their book, Short-Row Colorwork Knitting, and I’m going to have so much fun playing with the stitch patterns.
