For anyone new on here that doesn’t know me ⬆️

“Training like an athlete” is becoming more and more popular which is great.

Training like an athlete is training to be:

- Strong
- Powerful
- Fast
- Resilient/robust
- Mobile
- Conditioned

And it utilizes techniques and methods from so many different styles of training (eg. Body building, powerlifting, Oly lifting, track etc.)

The difference is in the purpose of the training.

To me, the purpose of training like an athlete is to perform.

Whatever that looks like to you.

For an athlete or weekend warrior they may want to improve performance in their sport or activity.

For someone else, improving performance may mean getting out of pain or just improving their overall quality of life.

If you love powerlifting, body building or any other style of training then by all means stick with it.

But, if you find yourself getting bored with your workouts, lacking motivation, not knowing what to do… And you want to not only look better, but feel better and perform better.

You may want to consider “training like an athlete”.

Program launching soon ⏳

⚡️POST COMPETITION TRAINING⚡️

After a long build-up and training with a fairly strict program and schedule for the last few months, this week was just about movement.

After Apex, I took a few days off which was needed to let my body and nervous system recover.

Once I got back in the gym this week the only goals were to get some movement in and do things that would help my body to recover and feel good.

For me this included some light power work, longer eccentrics/isometrics, and a lot of machine work.

There was a general plan but no set program.

As important as it is to have a program 90% of the time, in weeks like these it can be nice to just lift.

If you train hard for something it can be mentally taxing as well as physically, so there’s no need to jump back into something right away.

Now I can reevaluate some goals and plan the next phase of my program based on what I want to improve.

NYC Marathon Prep - Full Session ➡️

Here’s a look at a session with one of my remote athletes as he prepares for the NYC Marathon.

Most runners make the mistake of not doing any strength training because:

- they think they don’t need it
- they think they don’t have time for it
- they think it will negatively impact their running training (too sore or fatigued)

Fitting in your strength training is one of the most beneficial things you can do for not only your performance but also your health during marathon prep (if done right!)

If you’re a runner or athlete who wants a program built for them, I still have space for more remote athletes. Send me a message to see if it’s right for you.

What exercises did we use to get here?

4 years of consistent training

Everyone wants the magic 3 exercises to do ‘XYZ’

But that’s not how this works.

If you want to see results you need a well-thought-out program that you can follow consistently.

If you want to see the current 3-day split we are using with him comment “YES” and I will send it to you.

⚡️APEX MIAMI RECAP⚡️

Such a fun day competing alongside some incredible athletes.

Super happy with how things went despite some tough conditions in the heat.

PR’d in a lot of the events and increased my overall score from Chicago.

Huge thanks to @timrileytraining and @apexathlete.official for putting on such a great event. And also to all the coaches/referees who make it possible.

‘til next time 🫡

If your training includes weekly changes in exercises, doing something new or different in the gym every time you go, you don’t have a training program.

Training implies that we have a goal in mind. Whether that’s as simple as just increasing strength or muscle mass or more specific like prepping for a race, sport, or competition.

Variability in your training programs is important, especially for athletes (this could be including multi-planer movements or exercises).

But variation in the sense of constantly changing the whole workout is not if we have specific performance goals.

In a training program weeks should build on each other. Each cycle should complement the next. Exercises change or progress when they need to, not just because it’s a new week.

If you’re an athlete, or someone with specific goals in mind, make sure you are training like it.
