Throughout my journey this month, I’ve been reading this beautiful book by Peter Korn, founder and executive director of the Centre for Furniture Craftsmanship (a woodworking and design school @woodschoolmaine). I feel like he knew the deepest, most conflicted parts of my brain and somehow articulated it exactly. He perfectly described being passionate about craft and a yearning for mastery while also giving a pathway to living a good life enhanced by finding meaning through making… without having it takeover your life. He started as a carpenter who learned to make furniture 🪑 which led to learning to design furniture and eventually that led to teaching how to make furniture… and finally to building a school for woodworking. I feel like I am living in a parallel universe here and loved reading his thought process on this life. If you are a maker or creative person, I would love for you to read this book. by @felicialowong

For my birthday this year, @houshun09 asked me what I wanted to do… I said, I wanted to be on a mountain 🏔️ with snow ❄️ and have cheese fondue 🫕 and somehow he made it all happen here in 🇨🇭 Spending the day at the top of Jungfraujoch, seeing the Bernese Alps, visiting Swiss villages, and doing it all with my family has been the absolute best. From the first day of kindergarten to the last day of elementary school 🏫 We are so proud of you, Russell! 💗 and we are so thankful for the years of guidance and support from kind, encouraging, and patient teachers. Well that was July! ☀️✨ so many celebrations… from @houshun09’s birthday at @sulaindianrestaurant to my birthday dinner at @casamolina.ca and our 14-year wedding anniversary at @luciaonmain we were so lucky to enjoy some incredible meals. We even found some omurice near Gastown 💗We filled all the days in between with Russell’s first BJJ tournament, Nina’s first sailing classes and astronomy camp. I spent many laptop days working out of @fablehome and spent a week revisiting the university campus. I even attended my high school reunion 😳 And finally, in July we decided to upgrade our future camping adventures 🏕️I’m blessed to share this life with my family and @houshun09 who is not afraid of trying something new and is always willing to grow. We are in our “why not?” era 😆 by @felicialowong

And so it begins! ❄️❄️❄️ We started the season with a few brilliant and beautiful days up at Sun Peaks. Years ago, when I first started @sweetgeorgia in 2004 I still had a design office in Gastown just down the street from Finch’s Tea House on Pender. It became my absolute favourite place for lunch sandwiches, coffee, work meetings, get togethers, afternoon cookie breaks… literally everything. My favourite lunch was Genoa salami with Edam in a baguette, a coffee, and a cookie. I loved that corner spot.

We held a couple of @sweetgeorgia photo shoots here because the window light was stunning, soft, and beautiful. @houshun09 and I had our first lunch there and later @theapartmentphoto shot our wedding photos there in 2011. Each year, on our wedding anniversary we would order baguette sandwiches from Finch’s and have a picnic.

Recently, I was saddened to hear that this location of Finch’s is closed.

Lately, I’ve been reminded of this more and more… if you love something, enjoy it, grow it, love it, support it, do it NOW. Places, people, moments, and life will pass and me saying “I’m too busy” doesn’t preclude things from changing, evolving, or disappearing.

Thankfully Finch’s has one remaining location at 501 East Georgia that we’ll be making time to visit soon.

Never in a million years did I imagine that alpine ski racing was a thing that would be a part of our lives, but here we are ⛷️✨💗 I could not be more thankful that @jomully and her family introduced us to the idea of the Grouse Tyee Ski Club @grousetyee almost six years ago.

I was completely convinced by the concept that we can build resilient kids through sport.

I love the idea that ski racing can serve as a framework for learning life skills, developing resilience and grit, setting personal goals, and experiencing the highs and lows of competition. The goal of Tyee is to raise great humans through the process of learning to become great ski racers. It’s really about more than just skiing or racing. These young athletes get the opportunity to learn about commitment, intentional practice, friendship, teamwork, time management, organization, independence, and so much more.

With Russell in U12 and Nina in U8, we’ve been in the Club for five years now. This season, about 60% of our days from the beginning December to end May will be spent getting the kids on snow. The kids attend early morning training sessions every weekend and they also ski after school during the weeknights. We’ll drive them up and down the different mountains as needed for training and race days. Dan and I volunteer on race days, he helps out on the weekends at the alpine cabin, and I volunteer on the board helping with communications. Our days are full (since skiing is not the only activity 🤪) but being a part of the Club has been an absolutely wonderful experience for our whole family. It gives our days structure, routines, and rhythm. And it’s brought us into a community of positive, strong, and spirited families who love to ski and just be outdoors.

These are the days!! ❄️ Nina and I had one of our best “Nina-Mama” ski days this week 💗 I love how cheerful, curious, brave, and playful she is when she skis. I let her take the lead, choosing the path when we hit a fork in the road… she chooses the bumps and powder almost every time 😆 #ninaeden taken in Harmony Express by @felicialowong
