Learning Like a Plant» (2022–2025) realisiert.

We’re thrilled to share that our MA team member Felipe Castelblanco has been shortlisted for the Aesthetica Art Prize 2026 with Tunda. 🌿

Tunda is a cinematic work developed within Plants_Intelligence. Learning Like a Plant, an SNSF-funded research project hosted by IAGN at HGK Basel FHNW.

Through his socially engaged practice, Felipe works across cinema, participatory methodologies, and territorial research, exploring more-than-human relations and collective ways of knowing.

As a lecturer in our MA Transversal Design programme at IXDM, Felipe brings these questions into the classroom, inviting students to approach artistic research as a collaborative, situated, and experimental practice.

Congratulations, Felipe, on this well-deserved recognition! ✨

Tunda will have its UK premiere at York Art Gallery, where the Aesthetica Art Prize exhibition runs from 17 July to 15 November 2026.

Tunda was realized within the framework of Plants_Intelligence. Learning Like a Plant, a research project funded by SNSF and hosted by IAGN HGK Basel FHNW. The work was co-commissioned by Haus für Medienkunst and supported by Stiftung Niedersachsen.

Video Installation

In 2012, Felipe attempted to build the smallest boat that could hold only one person’s weight. As a result, He devised a precarious way to navigate through large bodies of water using a chair, while sitting and contemplating the landscape from within. This became a performance and then a film, which started in lake Wesserunsett in Mainand then has been re-enacted in places like the Pacific Coast of Colombia, Mexico, California, England, Italy, Norway, Sweden, Philippines and Australia among others. Driftless explores notions of borders as a form of contemporary confinement while embracing the ocean as an open and public site for artistic interventions.

Detrás la Noche /
Plant Movement(s)

@felipecastel During the #beyondconservation2022 residency, I spent time with plants during the day & through the darkness of the night. Equipped with special UV portable lamps that induce fluorescence and a multispectral camera capable to see beyond the human visual spectrum of light, I spent time crisscrossing layers of invisibility, shadow, & mystic nights in the primary. There, I was able to produce images that render subtle and sub-visible relations maintained among forest beings while in darkness, from plants positioning their leaves to capture the dim light of the day to spores, fungi, and pollen holding together a network of interactions. This work took place at @caminoverdetambopata, a living seed bank & a hugely important buffer zone where endangered Amazonia plants and trees are given space & time to thrive. Together, these images comprise a new photographic series that brings the viewer closer to a somewhat unfamiliar view of the rainforest: the night & all its rich encounters which often escape the human gaze.

Parallel to the photographs, I gathered footage & interviews with various hosts & experts, exploring the issue of plant intelligence & how plants become active in mobilizing human communities to part-take in restorative processes.

After the gold mining rush in Madre de Dios, scientists, land defenders, & Indigenous communities seem devoted to mitigating the damage caused by deforestation and mercury poisoning of soils, air, and rivers. Therefore, plant teachers like Bobinzana are called upon to teach us modes of plant-led remediation and worlding. In the process, these plants become co-conspirators poised with huge potential to mobilize together human & non-human communities in search of collective survival & against unprecedented anthropogenic challenges. These conversations, recordings, & visual research will result in a new film essay.

Around this time last year, I had the honor to be in the jury for the show Rundgang 50 Hertz 2022 at @hamburger_bahnhof in Berlin, featuring some of Germany’s most intriguing young artists concluding their studies. Among them @omgirlwtf @_stephjoyce and @clara_alisch I finally got a copy of the catalog, which includes thoughtful and provoking artworks + a new essay I wrote on artistic research and this nice picture of my work in the cover.
