Laura Fidalgo is a jazz vocalist and Ph.D student in Pittsburgh, as well as the host of 90.5 WESA'S new series, "Taking the Mic." Fidalgo grew up in the Canary Islands of Spain and says she's found the jazz scenes to be masculine and hierarchal both in Spain and in Pittsburgh. However, she remains "hopeful" after talking with the women that are part of the "Taking the Mic" series.

"Why Try to Change Me Now" by Coleman and McCarthy

Thank you @emmamihok for sharing with me this song performed by the incredible Fiona Apple. It's crazy how all of the sudden, free from everyday stress, my mind feels joy in learning and singing new stuff.

Just passed the first year evaluation of the PhD Program.
I wouldn’t have made it this far without the redistribution of wealth that allowed me to receive scholarships and pursue my studies, and without the support of my friends—my chosen family—who remind me that nothing is that important and that I’ll always be amazing in their eyes.
Let’s keep building our community; they make a lot of noise, but we’re way more fun.
There’s room for all of us in our vision of the future. by @fidalgolaura
