In case you're in Madrid, Spain on June 25 of 2023,
here's a good chance to hear Spanish jazz & dance music from the 40s (paradoxically made during Franco's dictatorship that lasted until his death on November 20 of 1975) by the #HowlinRitmo Orchestra I had the pleasure to organize with Californian trombonist Steven Osorio at @liceo.frances.madrid’s jazz cycle.

We’ll be paying tribute to the women who kept their jazz careers in the 40s after the Spanish civil war, mainly Afro-Boricuan legend #ElsieBayron, Spanish vocalists #KatiaMorlands, #RinaCeli, Lolita Garrido, Mary Merche Abreu & #IssaPereira, Spanish vocal group #HermanasRussell (featuring #AntoniaRussell) and last but not least, American vocalist Jane Morgan.

The orchestras & small groups that are also receiving this same tribute are Orquesta Gran Casino, Luis Rovira's Orchestra (for the record, Catalonian jazz clarinet player #LuisRovira is Spain's own Benny Goodman), Orquesta Casablanca (that also had Basque jazz trumpeter & vocalist José Moro (who also livened up Madrid's jazz scene)), Orquesta Plantación (directed from 1940 to 1942 by Cuban Basque-born pianist Adolfo Araco & from 1943 onwards by Catalonian film composer Josep Casas i Augé/José Casas Augé), multi-intrumentalist Sebastián Albalat, French violinist, vocalist & bandleader #BernardHilda (who employed Jane Morgan (who previously worked with #ArtMooney's Orchestra) & tenor saxophonist #DonByas (hired by Hilda from #DonRedman's Orchestra on 1947)), trumpet player & violinist José Puertas (whom I refer also as Spain's own #BunnyBerigan) & bandleader #NicasioTejada.

In addition to yours truly (p,v,arr) & Osorio (tb,arr), the orchestra has also the following musicians that are part of this historical event:

Vocalists: Bea Montero, Laura González Fidalgo & Julia Villanueva.

Trumpets: Luis Fran Bustos, Alex Otheguy & Werlink Alexander Casanova.

Saxes: Joserra Zamora (as,ss,fl), Víctor Muñoz (cl,as) & Javier Bruna (ts).

Violin: Maia Prieto.

Rhythm section: Kyra Teboe (with whom I’ll be proudly alternating in some tunes in the pno chair), Antonio Troya (g), Guido Farusi (sb) & Greg Meson (d).

Tickets available in Koobin.

If you can handle me at this (upper pic) with @enclavedecoro, you can handle me at this too (lower pic) with the Howlin’ Ritmo Orch. (with whom I’ll be recording for the first time sometime in June. To quote #LionelHampton et al, stand by for further announcements) and more.

And yes, I love doing both things greatly!
