“Our Child is Born and Dies in the War”
•
Made by yours truly.
•
I hope this hurts your heart the way it did mine. This cotton duck canvas is the exact length and width of one of the body bags used to protect the body of a Palestinian baby. I saw it in a video where the body rests on a prayer rug. Adults funeralize the baby. They say “Allahu Akbar” as their heads are down.
•
The canvas is 11 inches by 23 inches. Please think about that. The baby was barely two feet tall. I don’t know how to explain to you that they should have had a chance to grow up. I should not have had to make this. There should not have had to been a funeral this soon.
•
These are who zionists want to take land from. These are who Israel describes as the “children of darkness”. The martyrdom of these babies show the vileness of the western world. That is why a ceasefire is not enough. I want these children to live, love, dance, sing, run, jump, and smile in a Free Palestine. I want their families to hear the birds and for the warplanes to be silent. I want you all to see how beautiful these children are when we just Let. Them. Grow. And I will not accept anything short of that. by @finally.phoenix

My brothers of Morehouse, I hope my message reaches you well.
•
On September 9th, 2023, a Morehouse student entered one of Spelman's residence halls, jokingly asking the women who live there to have sex with him. I should not have to explain how disrespectful, wicked, and unfortunately recurring this behavior is.
•
It is worth saying bluntly that Morehouse College has a sexual assault problem. There have been multiple cases within the first month of the Fall 2023 semester. Hundreds of Spelmanites abhor Men of Morehouse for this. I am embarrassed on behalf of my institution.
•
The words you see here are taken from the mission statement of Black Men for the Eradication of Sexism. It was written in 1994 by Men of Morehouse. I present their messages on banners of cotton, the material of "wife beaters". They ultimately speak for themselves. So if you will not listen to me, listen to them.
•
On these maroon-painted words, the color of Morehouse resembles the color of blood. There is a reason these banners are messy; only the most naive would expect a sexual assault conversation to be pure. I set these banners on our architecture, places you would almost instantly recognize as our classroom and resource buildings. You would not have been able to attend your class without first noticing these words.
•
My brothers of Morehouse, it is absolutely necessary for us to unlearn the gender roles we grew up surrounded by. Our college is known for graduating civic and political leaders. Please do not tarnish Morehouse's reputation with your foolish acts towards our sisters at Spelman and Clark Atlanta. They should not have to work this hard to teach us the most basic of decency. Responsibility for our actions falls on no one but us. Now let’s do better. A cotton banner suspended on a maroon railing. The banner reads “It is SEXISM, not biology, that confines men to being aggressive and women to being nurturers. The struggle against SEXISM must become an issue of primary importance if we are to advance as a people.” taken in Atlanta University Center by @finally.phoenix

THANK YOU @monadnyc FOR TRUSTING MY VISION!!

Two photographs I took were featured in “Love Letters to Philly” on July 31st, 2026.

I asked a handful of my coworkers for their time to pose as models. I asked them to wear footwear that they commute in or that they have a very intimate relationship with. The result was a variety of colorful shoes. To symbolize travel, I posed one group of my coworkers on one of those dot-textured squares on a sidewalk (they’re called Truncated Dome Pads), and captured the other group of coworkers in movement through a train station.

The purpose of this project was to recognize commute as a feature of modern labor, and realize what parts of our bodies and personalities are shaped by it.

To celebrate my 23rd birthday, I have rewritten my artist statement. It is as follows:

I am a painter, photographer, and graphic designer. I highlight people’s physical experiences through various iterations of color on the human body. My subjects include athletes, performers, workers, and victims of sexual violence. Our bodies carry memories, strengths, and weaknesses completely separate from our minds, so I carry that idea into my art to open up greater conversations about our personal perceptions of labor.

As I begin to consider how global colonialism has created the conditions under which we have these discussions, my painting and photographic styles are shifting. I am finally blending my acrylic colors after four years of painting. I am using symbols reminiscent of commodities such as chains and West African masks. However, I still keep my colors bright and supernatural to exalt my subjects from their status in our heads as ordinaries. They are at the forefront of our cultural preservation, and so I create out of respect and solidarity.

WE MAKE THE ROAD is a show hosted by Vox Populi gallery. It is curated by Ella Konefal and KT Pe Benito as a fundraiser show for the W.E.B. Dubois Movement School for Abolition and Reconstruction.

WE MAKE THE ROAD is my first show after graduating from Morehouse College and features 39 other artists. My chosen artwork, OUR CHILD IS BORN AND DIES IN THE WAR, is a memorial for the tens of thousands of children who were killed in Palestine through genocide by Israel.

WE MAKE THE ROAD is open at Vox Populi Gallery until March 29th. by @finally.phoenix

Act III: YES, YOU CAN NOW REFER TO ME AS A MOREHOUSE MAN. A MAN OF ACADEMIC HONORS.

I do realize the privilege of being able to graduate from Morehouse after attending for four consecutive years. I am not better than those who have not, and they are not worse than me.

It’s been real, AUC. Your art scene makes a grown man cry. I hope every student under your consortium, past and current, soon realizes the potential they have.

MY NAME IS PHOENIX ANDREW ELLIS SATTERFIELD.

I don’t have an essay, only emotions.

Above all, I am an artist. A painter. A photographer. And I have fallen in love with Maroon, White, and Gold.

So long, Morehouse. You are the wind under my wings.
