THANK YOU @monadnyc FOR TRUSTING MY VISION!!

Two photographs I took were featured in “Love Letters to Philly” on July 31st, 2026.

I asked a handful of my coworkers for their time to pose as models. I asked them to wear footwear that they commute in or that they have a very intimate relationship with. The result was a variety of colorful shoes. To symbolize travel, I posed one group of my coworkers on one of those dot-textured squares on a sidewalk (they’re called Truncated Dome Pads), and captured the other group of coworkers in movement through a train station.

The purpose of this project was to recognize commute as a feature of modern labor, and realize what parts of our bodies and personalities are shaped by it.

To celebrate my 23rd birthday, I have rewritten my artist statement. It is as follows:

I am a painter, photographer, and graphic designer. I highlight people’s physical experiences through various iterations of color on the human body. My subjects include athletes, performers, workers, and victims of sexual violence. Our bodies carry memories, strengths, and weaknesses completely separate from our minds, so I carry that idea into my art to open up greater conversations about our personal perceptions of labor.

As I begin to consider how global colonialism has created the conditions under which we have these discussions, my painting and photographic styles are shifting. I am finally blending my acrylic colors after four years of painting. I am using symbols reminiscent of commodities such as chains and West African masks. However, I still keep my colors bright and supernatural to exalt my subjects from their status in our heads as ordinaries. They are at the forefront of our cultural preservation, and so I create out of respect and solidarity.

In this experimental photoshoot I tried to capture the difference in which my chain and skin reflect light. I let the chain rest on my shoulder and collar bone to match the rhythm of ocean waves (blue) and mountains (red). Some shots are looser in meaning to me than others. But this shoot is inspired by Black people’s historical relationship with metal chains. by @phlickery

WE MAKE THE ROAD is a show hosted by Vox Populi gallery. It is curated by Ella Konefal and KT Pe Benito as a fundraiser show for the W.E.B. Dubois Movement School for Abolition and Reconstruction.

WE MAKE THE ROAD is my first show after graduating from Morehouse College and features 39 other artists. My chosen artwork, OUR CHILD IS BORN AND DIES IN THE WAR, is a memorial for the tens of thousands of children who were killed in Palestine through genocide by Israel.

WE MAKE THE ROAD is open at Vox Populi Gallery until March 29th. by @phlickery

Scanned and photographed drawings from my sketchbook.

I like for my journal entries and notes to surround my drawings, so for the scans I have edited out some paragraphs I am not comfortable showing.

For context on the last drawing, I recently purchased some used headphones that pair to my phone under the name “Yunus”, a name I did not decide on myself. So I left in my sketchbook a little thank you note for them.
