To celebrate my 23rd birthday, I have rewritten my artist statement. It is as follows:

I am a painter, photographer, and graphic designer. I highlight people’s physical experiences through various iterations of color on the human body. My subjects include athletes, performers, workers, and victims of sexual violence. Our bodies carry memories, strengths, and weaknesses completely separate from our minds, so I carry that idea into my art to open up greater conversations about our personal perceptions of labor.

As I begin to consider how global colonialism has created the conditions under which we have these discussions, my painting and photographic styles are shifting. I am finally blending my acrylic colors after four years of painting. I am using symbols reminiscent of commodities such as chains and West African masks. However, I still keep my colors bright and supernatural to exalt my subjects from their status in our heads as ordinaries. They are at the forefront of our cultural preservation, and so I create out of respect and solidarity.

Saved the best for last✨

There’s so much to be said about the journey to this point. A journey that started far longer than just four years ago and today is a celebration of it all.

Thank you Ms.Denise, Professor Aguas, and Westphal BRIDGE.

Thank you Ms.Bernetta, Sandra, and the Liberty Scholars program.

Thank you Lisa, Cindy, and the Fashion Design staff and faculty.

Thank you to the friends and colleagues made along the way.

And thank you most of all to Drexel University for giving the chance of a lifetime to a girl from North Philly.

I do realize the privilege of being able to graduate from Morehouse after attending for four consecutive years. I am not better than those who have not, and they are not worse than me.

It’s been real, AUC. Your art scene makes a grown man cry. I hope every student under your consortium, past and current, soon realizes the potential they have.

1881 DIARIES: UNDAUNTED-THE TESTIMONY

A first-gen girl from Baltimore took a leap of faith. This one is personal because I am the oldest of 8 children (my besties) Leaving my family behind was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever made, but it became one of the best. I got sick my freshman year and missed the first two weeks of school. I was scared I’d fall behind, but God is a healer. Just two months later, I lost my uncle—my best friend, my heart—and I felt like my world stopped. But I kept going because I knew that’s what he would have wanted. Uncle Lep & Uncle Rose I did it🥺

Sophomore year, my mental health hit rock bottom. I almost left Spelman. But God surrounded me with my friends, family, and my church who prayed with me, studied with me, sat with me through panic attacks, made sure I didn’t give up, and so much more.

Junior year, I was told I couldn’t get the Parent PLUS Loan two weeks before school started. I needed $32K to stay. I had prayed not to take out another loan—and God answered, just not how I expected. I started class late and fell behind, but He made a way.

Spelman taught me to advocate for myself and never give up. There were moments I wanted to transfer, moments I thought the enemy had won, but God whispered, “You will graduate, Chelsey. I keep my promises.”

Now, here I am—my last four semesters PAID IN FULL, graduating ON TIME. That’s nothing but FAVOR.

The scripture that comes to mind would have to be Philippians 4:13: “I can do ALL things through Christ who STRENGTHENS me” because that’s what I did. 🙏🏽💙🤍
