We asked students a simple question: can you spot surplus food?

Most people think it looks different… but the truth is, surplus food is perfectly good food, it’s just extra at risk of going to waste!

This #EarthDay, it’s a reminder that tackling food waste can start with small shifts in how we think.

Through the @aibireland FoodCloud Community Meals Programme, meals like this help turn surplus into something meaningful, connecting communities and making sure good food is shared, not wasted.

Something we’re proud to be part of. by @foodcloud

Share more, waste less.

We joined Adam and the @studentpantrygalway team at @uniofgalwaysu as FoodCloud’s food truck served community meals to students, thanks to the @aibireland FoodCloud Community Meals Programme.

Spéir student pantry receives surplus food from FoodCloud and redistributes the equivalent of over 100 meals each week.

The Golden Jubilee Trust has supported FoodCloud’s Hub and Host project since its pilot phase in 2025, helping us bring good surplus food to more rural communities.

What began as a pilot now spans three rural host locations in Kerry, Donegal and Kilkenny, tackling food waste and food insecurity together.

To date, Hub and Host has redistributed 116 tonnes of surplus food, equivalent to over 275,000 meals.

Behind that progress is the support of funders like the Golden Jubilee Trust. As one of the project’s earliest supporters, the Trust has helped us develop this approach and extend the reach of food redistribution in rural Ireland.

Thank you to the Golden Jubilee Trust for its generous support and for backing Hub and Host from the beginning. Together, we’re working towards a future where no good food goes to waste.

In 2014, Tesco became the first retailer in Ireland to partner nationally with FoodCloud and more recently Olio.

Since then, over 24 million meals worth of surplus food have been donated to local community groups and homes across Ireland!

Every evening, colleagues log surplus food that’s still perfectly good to eat through FoodCloud so local community groups and Olio food waste heroes can collect and redistribute it where it’s needed most.

Because sharing food beats wasting food every single time.

We’re nearly at half a BILLION meals. 💙

October is World Food Month, and this month we’re set to reach the equivalent of 500 million meals redistributed. That will take us halfway towards our goal of one billion by 2030. 🥕

These photos bring us to Ranelagh Community Response and their community cooking classes at TK2 in Charlemont, where surplus food helps people cook, learn and connect.

This is what keeps us going. Good food being used. Recipes being shared. People coming together.

To everyone who has donated food, given their time, funded our work or shared surplus in their community: thank you. You’ve helped make this milestone possible.

And there’s room for more of us. Volunteer your time, make a donation or help your workplace share its surplus food.

Nearly halfway there, let’s keep going. 💙

DM us to get involved!

What does it look like when surplus food, affordable choice and community support come together?

Last Friday, we joined @empowerfingal and @cooperativehousingireland in Dublin 15 to launch the Empower Social Supermarket.

The new supermarket helps people access nutritious food with dignity and choice, alongside wider community support. This model could be adapted across the island of Ireland.

On the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste, we’re sharing a look at the launch and the partnership making it happen.
