It was great playing at @sonorities this year in Belfast. I feel blessed to take my cinematic apocalyptic noise to such an amazing high-tech space, performing in the Sonic Lab at @qubelfast at one of the festival's immersive audio concerts.

I spent a lot of time during my Masters refining the immersive listening album that the tracks I performed came from (no, it's still not out). Although there was therefore some confidence that they work spatially, it's tricky to know how it pans out (pun intended) in a larger space and I was so glad to run them though such a powerful immersive sound system.

I got some great feedback from the audience, with @lia_mice saying it felt like interstellar travel! That's a bit more refined a comment than my last (and more hectic) AV set where someone said it made their partner throw up. I'm happy taking compliments where I can get them to be honest.

A real mixture of interesting performances, talks and programming at Sonorities. Check it out next year!

Just sharing some of the new audiovisual liveset I put together for the recent @crux_av_london x @light.up.ramsgate event I performed at.
All of the new video material was just shot on my old iPhone and then processed to hell and back in Resolume Arena, with lots of BPM Sync on parameter modulation and an audio feed from Ableton Live.
I'm liking the new aesthetic, which I also used for the 4K music video for my track Barrage that's up on YouTube courtesy of the @grey_meta label!

No AV gigs lined up for the forseeable future, let me know if you can help to change that! ;)

Unexploded Device is just that: latent, unexpected, absolutely ready to go off and OUT NOW on all platforms. Slamming off-kilter techno, laced throughout with IDM influences and an unpredictability that keeps this far-flung end of the techno spectrum so incredibly fresh and powerful.

Force Majeure is one of many monikers of UK-based Nick Ronin, who has been producing and performing electronic music and video across a wide range of genres since 1998. He is both a product of and veteran of the rave-oriented UK underground DIY scene. He currently works on six different projects to satisfy his musical curiosity: Ronin (breakcore), Obese (bass music), Villain (live techno/electro), Force Majeure (experimental), Killdren (rave-punk), Chwalaw (electronica).

This project is a new stepping stone in his artistic career. Whilst the lack of a dancefloor focus permeates the first two albums, this EP provided an opportunity for Nick to continue exploring the more experimental and abstracted side of his musical tastes, whilst dropping fresh bombs that should be handled with care.

This project saw his workflow become increasingly hardware-based. His prior two albums have separately explored the outer limits of sampling in the self-titled Force Majeure, on Concrete Collage, and synthesis in the follow-up release, The Permanence of Decay.

For the Unexploded Device EP, Nick merged the different disciplines into a singular process. The sound palette is wider because of it – full of hardware and field recordings plus a heavy resampling workflow that features lots of granular and spectral processing. The process of previously making an ambisonic album gave new depth to these four tracks.

Nick holds a Master’s degree in Audio Production from the University of Westminster, has taught music and video tech since 2012, and his first book, Sound Signatures: Crafting Your Electronic Music Identity, is due to be published by Routledge in December 2025. Never one to stop, he is currently writing a new book on building a live set using Ableton Live.

One big question for the Force Majeure project was ‘How do I make original video material when I’m more of an audio guy?’  Although I always had a visual side, I’ve only recently managed to develop a technique for my own visuals that I’m happy with.

When I was at school age, I wanted to be a film maker – but none of my friends were interested in that and the process is too expensive and collaborative. I found solace in the solitude and immediacy of music production.

I used to love drawing too, but I hated my A Level courses and had lots of conflicts with my art teachers – it put me off traditional art and further education (ironically I’m a teacher now haha).

I’ve been pissing about with pixels for about 20 years now, off and on. I started by just sampling cool films and then animating the fudge out of effects to make hyper-glitchy and multi-layered compositions in Resolume.

I still do some of that, but recently I started getting obsessed with textures and natural details. Macro photography seemed like a good partner for the field recordings and granular synthesis I was using for Force Majeure.

Although I might upgrade later, for now I can do this with minimal equipment – a phone, a gimbal (when I remember to take it on walks) and a new toy of a £30 kids microscope that records HD video.

I capture cool stuff in nature or industrial sites, trim and grade it and then import it to Resolume for effects torture, masking, audio reactivity and compositing. I’m still finding my feet, but you can see the initial results in my video for the track Barrage on YouTube or in one of my audiovisual shows (book me!).

I’ve had a second (quite chilled tbh) 2nd album from recorded synth jams and hardware experiments ready for nearly two years now, but I had the silly idea of trying to release it as an immersive audio album, which just delayed everything. I will probably just finish the last few stereo mixes and then release it as normal - with an immersive listening option.

Here's the 3rd and final noise study that I ran through a lissajous scope. This is by far my favourite real-time jam, that uses a Rungler computer patch on the Music Thing Workshop System... although, the noise is so delicious it doesn't result in the same lovely geometry of the more tonal jams I did!
The result of these experiments is being released on my Bandcamp page this Friday – a two track noise EP called Nucleation Point. Check it out, I'll give ya a heads up! ;)

Here’s an update about my musical projects and some nerdery around an immersive audio liveset I’m doing in Belfast for the @sonorities festival on Friday.

The ravey projects are a bit dormant to be honest, but hopefully I will find motivation to make a few bangers amidst all the experimental and folk-electronica of @forcemajeureaudio and @chwalaw_music!

I’ve got new music coming out for both of those projects soon. Stay tuned for news, where I will likely have to wheel out my speckled mug once again for the algos. by @forcemajeureaudio
