Movement and exercise go way deeper than most people think.

This reminded me of a guest lecture I had during DPT school, an MD researcher came in to present his stem cell findings. What he talked about then was interesting to say the least.

Stem cells don’t differentiate into the right type of tissue unless they receive the right mechanical stimulus. Perfect genetic material, right lab conditions, all the raw ingredients — and if the mechanical environment is wrong, the cell won’t become what it’s supposed to become.

I remember thinking: we’re learning this, but we don’t really apply it. And nearly the whole industry ignores it.

That’s mechanotransduction — physical forces on the outside of a cell communicating all the way down to which parts of the DNA get expressed. Every cell in your body has a mechanical environment where it works best. Compress what should be decompressed, stretch what should be shortened, and the whole system starts to break down.

The conventional model treats the symptom that shows up at the end of that chain. It doesn’t ask what mechanical environment produced it.

@theleverking recognized this and has spent years building the framework to actually put it into practice. The entire methodology of @functionalpatterns is built around giving the body — and by extension, every cell in it — the mechanical conditions it needs to function correctly. Not managing what breaks down. Changing the environment that’s causing the breakdown.

That’s what you’re watching in these clips. Not just exercise. A deliberate mechanical input.

If you want to watch the full video it’s on the Functional Patterns YouTube channel “Why everyone needs to prioritize Functional Training”

Before FP: May 24th, 2024 Age 39 - Tried HIIT training, stretching, cycling, chiropractic, running, acupuncture and supplements

LeAnn had a major health event after getting covid 3 years prior to starting FP. All her systems crashed leading to her posture to be stuck in a protective state. She experienced neurological symptoms, POTS, poor sleep, nervous system dysregulation, limbs falling asleep, numbness and tingling, gut problems, poor circulation, neurological symptoms, coordination issues, anxiety, depression, weight loss/muscle loss, low energy and constant sickness. Some healing was achieved prior to starting FP but she still had a lot of symptoms and was stuck in a constant survival and healing state.

Structural Dysfunctions
❌ Spinal Protrusions
❌ Slumped Posture
❌ Scapular Winging
❌ Rib Shift Left
❌ Unstable Lumbar & Pelvis
❌ Neck Pain - Daily 3/10 after walking with monthly episodes 5-7/10 lasting 5 days

After FP: August 22nd, 2025 Age 40

All symptoms listed have significantly improved. As a result, LeAnn reports she’s feeling stronger, more confident, is improving her body composition, having amazing sleep and has more energy. These improvements have allowed her to fully function each day and shift from a constant survival state to a building and thriving state.

Structural Improvements
✅ Spine supported by muscle
✅ Posture more aligned
✅ Scapulas integrated
✅ Ribs and hips better stacked
✅ More Stable Lumbar & Pelvis
✅ Neck pain reduced - Daily 0/10 after walking with quarterly episodes 5-7/10 lasting 3 days

MOVE BETTER with @functionalpatterns.

FP works for everyone. I know some of you may be thinking, “There’s no way I can do that so FP must not be for me.” That couldn’t be farther from the truth. FP teaches you how to move the way you were meant to.

Whether you’ve had chronic pain for decades or are looking for a system that gets you moving in a sustainable fashion, FP is for you.

All Performance Member’s you see here once had chronic and in some cases debilitating hip, back, knee, neck, autoimmune dysfunction, and/or shoulder pain. The cool 😎 thing about doing FP is that the system helps you build your body back from the ground up. This allows our members to increase their movement/activity portfolio over time vs being more and more limited as they age.

For those who aren’t experiencing chronic pain, FP provides an opportunity for you to build/maintain athleticism so you can continue being active and enjoying life as you age.

If this message resonates with you, book a free consult call or assessment with us so you can learn and feel the FP difference.

NO MORE LIMITS. NO MORE CHRONIC PAIN.

“I would feel good for a little bit, but the underlying issue was still always there.”

That’s Nicole on two and a half years of low back pain. Every morning. On bad days it would spasm up to a 10 and put her on the ground for a couple of days.

As someone in the fitness and wellness space herself, she tried everything. Chiro, PTs, regular massage, every style of training. Each one helped for a bit. But a lot of what’s out there is built to calm pain down, and for her, even that relief kept wearing off. The problem underneath stayed where it was.

At her first assessment we filmed her standing, walking, and running in slow motion. That showed us the mechanical leaks contributing to her pain, and a lot of her morning tension came from standing and walking.

In 25 sessions over 3 months, her pain went to 0/10 on most days. She’s back on the tennis court now, and still training, because pain-free was never the finish line.

If your back is worst first thing in the morning, the fix might not be another stretch. It might be time to look at how you’re holding yourself and moving through life.

What does your back feel like in the first ten minutes after you get up?

You can have plenty of muscle, strength, and discipline and still be building on top of dysfunctional movement.

Tyler was an ex-collegiate wrestler who continued lifting and staying in great shape, but over time he started experiencing more pain, tightness, and restrictions. The solution wasn’t giving up strength training — it was learning how to use strength training to correct the problem instead of compounding it.

For the past couple years, we’ve been working on exactly that together, using @functionalpatterns to improve his movement, decompress his structure, and change the way he loads his body so he can continue getting stronger without constantly reinforcing the same imbalances.

If you’re someone who already trains but your body is starting to feel worse instead of better, this is exactly the type of problem we help people solve.

You don’t need to stop training. You need to learn how to train your body better.

If this sounds like you, DM me “FP” and let’s get started…

Pain & Frequent Headaches → Reduced Pain & Better Function

She had been dealing with headaches, neck and upper back pain, tightness, and stiffness since her early twenties, along with two herniated discs and a history of competitive sports. After a whiplash injury forced her to stop competing, she gradually reduced her activity and began experiencing additional discomfort while walking, making hiking and other activities increasingly frustrating.

After starting Functional Patterns in fall 2024, she began noticing changes in how her body felt and moved. By March 2026, her shoulder, back, neck, and rib pain had decreased from consistent 3/10 discomfort to occasional 1/10 discomfort, while her headaches became much less frequent.

Great work Anthony Blando!

Before FP (August 2024 | Age 42):

❌ Shoulder pain: 3/10 consistently
❌ Back pain: 3/10 consistently
❌ Neck pain: 3/10 consistently
❌ Rib pain: 3/10 consistently
❌ Headaches: 2 times a week
❌ Reduced activity due to pain and discomfort
❌ Walking and hiking became frustrating

After FP (March 2026):

✅ Shoulder pain: 1/10 occasionally
✅ Back pain: 1/10 occasionally
✅ Neck pain: 1/10 occasionally
✅ Rib pain: 1/10 occasionally
✅ Headaches: 2 times a month
✅ Improved ability to stay active
✅ Greater confidence in movement and daily activities

Strength training shouldn’t make you more compressed.

Everyone is already stuck in certain positions and movement patterns from the way they sit, stand, walk, train, and live.

If you strength train without addressing those patterns, you can end up getting stronger within the same positions you’re already stuck in.

Functional Patterns teaches you the priority variables needed to start undoing those patterns.

Once you understand those variables, you can use strength training differently — building muscle while teaching your body to decompress, stabilize, and move more efficiently.

You don’t need to stop lifting weights.

You need to learn how to make your strength work for your movement instead of against it.

If you want to learn how to strength train while improving your movement, DM me “MOVE” and I’ll show you how I can help.

Ever bend down, sleep wrong, or move slightly different and experience nagging pains and that “seriously, again?” feeling?

Here’s the truth: it’s not your fault — and your body isn’t broken.

Most solutions focus on where it hurts.
But recurring pain usually isn’t coming from that spot.

It’s coming from how your body is moving as a system.

When your fascia is restricted, your posture and coordination are off, your body compensates —
and that compensation shows up as pain.

Back. Hips. Neck. Over and over again.

That’s exactly what we address in our FREE workshop:

Pain, Posture & Performance Relief
April 12th · 10am–12pm
@ Functional Patterns Minnesota

You’ll learn how to:

• Release tension
• Improve posture
• Move as a connected system

And finally understand why your pain keeps coming back — and what to do about it.

Some thoughts from Sheri about her Functional Patterns journey so far:

“I started Functions Patterns after hearing about it from a good friend who does it. I studied it for about 9 months and, once I had an understanding of what it is all about could not wait to get started. I’ve been doing it for almost a year and honestly the more I do it the more I love it.

Some of the things I’ve noticed as I’ve been doing FP;

I see all my friends feel like they need to stretch and I noticed that I rarely feel like I need to stretch anymore!

I have noticed that i wake up in the morning and get out of bed with not one ounce of stiffness or soreness I feel like I’m bounding out of be !

I notice it in the way I stand straighter, I sit in a more balanced way and even when I go for a walk my lower back is not tight any more.

I like to play a LOT of tennis. For a long time I have been passionate about alignment and how important it is in keeping your body healthy. I believe that the better my alignment is the less likely I’ll be injured playing tennis. Since doing FP I have noticed my alignment has really improved

For the last 4 months I have been helping take care of a loved one with serious health issues. I am grateful to FP helping me gain so much more strength to allow me to do some of the heavy lifting (Literally) with no injuries.

I am a grandmother who wants to continue to have lots of fun and be active a long time with my young grandchildren. Continuing to train with FP allows me to do so.

I cannot say enough about FP- I wish everyone I know would do it because I think it would change their lives in a positive way.”
