NEW VOICES peers into the history of technologically generated voices and the trans experience of building a new voice. We meet a range of masked characters, from the 1939 World’s Fair “Voice Operation Demonstrator” to Amazon’s Alexa and more. What can we learn about ourselves by looking at how we interact with artificial voices?

We’re excited to welcome Lou Sydel @gesturestudies/ @gesturetheater as our first ever solo space artist! Lou will share NEW VOICES, a solo performance exploring gender, technology, and the trans experience through physical theater, gesture, and voice. Blending characters from the 1939 World’s Fair to Amazon’s Alexa, the work asks what our changing relationships with technology—and our own voices—can reveal about identity.

📅 August 8 & 9
🕒 7:30pm (no late-entry!)
📍 Creature Space, Gowanus, Brooklyn

Ticket link in bio. 🎟 We offer tiered ticket pricing to help keep our performances accessible for artists and our broader community. If you’re able, choosing a Supporter Ticket helps make lower-cost tickets possible for others.

See you soon at Creature Space! 🪩

~~
Lou Sydel is a choreographer, clown, and physical-theater artist. His work connects the linguistic study of gesture to experiences of queerness, asking the question: what does movement reveal about culture? Lou is the artistic director of Gesture Theater, a devising company of trans clowns, dancers, actors, and puppeteers.

Lou is a founder and part of the curatorial team for NYC’s first ever Physical Theater festival, PhysFest, at Stella Adler. More curatorial work with WestFest Top Floor and Dance Parade. Together with Lucia Gagliardone, Lou runs slowDANCE, a dance cooperative with an emphasis on community and process-forward work, where they produce monthly workshare potlucks, immersive nightlife pop-ups, full length works, and more.

Lou has taught children and adults at: Wendy’s Subway, Devise/Experiment, Bill Bowers’ Physical Theater Lab, WADE’s Movement for Survivors, Soma Soup, and more. He trained in mask work and clown at the Accademia Dell’Arte in Italy, and interdisciplinary performance theater at Bowdoin College. Notable performances include NYLA with Ellen Robbins’ Alumni, Arts on Site, Creature Space, Triskelion Arts, La MaMa Puppet Slam, Celebration Barn Theater, Brooklyn Art Haus, The Center at West Park, Edinburgh Fringe, and the International Society for Gesture Studies. taken in Creature Space by @gesturestudies
