The sound of melting ice 🧊

With my friend Aurélien Buiron, also known as Ghost in the Loop, we created a short documentary about his sound work within glaciers.

On September 20, 2025, we headed to Bonneval-sur-Arc 🚞
We climbed to an altitude of 2,900 meters, carrying around thirty kilograms of equipment, to listen to the sounds of the Grand Méan Glacier. The hike was particularly intense, but it allowed us to record the glacier cracking, the ice melting and the water flowing. Using these sounds, Aurélien then composed a piece of music.

Would you like a longer version of the track? Let us know in the comments.

The documentary is available by clicking the link in my bio 🔗

Alors merci. Vraiment.

MELT – A synthesizer played by glacier melting waters 🧊🎛️

Aurélien Buiron, aka Ghost In The Loop, doesn’t just record glaciers: he plays with them. Using hydrophones and contact microphones placed in the ice and meltwater, he captures cracks and flowing water and feeds them into his modular synthesizer. The glacier itself drives the music, in real time.

A piece to be heard as a sonic testimony to the melting of Alpine glaciers.

🎶 Aurélien composes the music for Last Stop Before Heaven and will work in technical collaboration with Nadia Simon on the project.

Currently scoring a 52’ documentary about the Mer de Glace for @france.tv

Instead of writing the music, I let the glacier write it. Its mass loss and ice velocity, measured by GLACIOCLIM / IGE (French national glacier observation service), shape the melodies, harmonies and modulations of the score. A rarely used approach in film music, and a way to hear what the ice is going through.📉

Usually a heavy user of hardware (modular, analog synths), I work exclusively with virtual instruments when scoring a film or a documentary.

As always, the data is translated into MIDI notes by the excellent Data to MIDI from @manifest.audio . On this track, several instances of Data to MIDI drive @weareuvi Synth Anthology 4, creating this arpeggiated sequence with a few tension notes that add an interesting color and keep the piece from sounding too smooth. In the background, an ambient pad, also from Synth Anthology 4, and guitar feedback textures from @spitfireaudio Audio’s library.

The glacier composes its own soundtrack. I’m only the conductor.

🇬🇧

Some landscapes are not merely meant to be seen.
They remember.
In Barentsburg, every photograph in this series by @studiokfe attempts to capture what the land holds in its memory, long after people have passed through.

🇬🇧

What if slowing down were the only way to truly discover Svalbard ? This series by @studiokfe explores long exposure as a way of perceiving the landscape differently, far removed from the snapshot.

Slowly working my way through a small part of the recordings made in Aotearoa New Zealand during the French-Related Research Projects programme. Easing back into the studio sessions with Taonga Pūoro master @tamihanakatene 🪈

Here, a take of pūmoana and one of tumutumu, recorded on my Revox A77 and my Akai 1000DS MKII respectively. Played back at slow speed to bring out the unique textures of Tāmihana’s breath and the saturation of the tape. It adds an even more ethereal, vaporous quality to takes that were already haunted, those distant, deeply spiritual sounds and their resonances.

Svalbard n'a jamais eu d'habitant indigène.

🇬🇧
Svalbard has never had an indigenous inhabitant. No ancestral culture, no people born of this land. Only humans who came, for a century now, to extract something from it: coal, then images, tourism, science.
A polar guide who's lived there for 20 years asks a simple question: however respectful our presence, does it still wear the place down? The warming we bring displaces the land's only true inhabitants, the animals, the only ones actually built for this cold.
In psychology, we find the same tension on a smaller scale: can we love a place, or a person, without eventually shaping it in our image, until it's worn thin?
We'd love to hear your take: can we inhabit a place without slowly undoing it?

Some journeys aren't about escaping the dark, they're about moving through it. That's the pull of the Arctic for us: a place where sky and ice blur into one, where the usual markers disappear.

In psychology, this holds true too: we only recognize light because we've known its absence. The hardest stretches often build the sharpest sense of clarity when it returns.
