A story from issue 5

🇬🇧This is Aurélien Buiron, known as @ghostintheloop_. A composer and electronic #music producer, he prefers to describe himself as a sound #explorer. Born in France, not far from that sea of ice he first saw at the age of eight - and which would continue to inhabit his thoughts for the next twenty years. As a young man he was naturally drawn to music, and with friends he founded a rock band.
He studied bass and guitar at the conservatory, played in other bands (from metal to pop rock), and eventually arrived at ambient music, which attracted him for its experimental and conceptual nature. Then came the pandemic, the study of electronic music, experimentation with old analogue tape recorders, improvisation, modular synthesizers, geophones, rivers, swamps, glaciers.

🇮🇹Questo è Aurélien Buiron, conosciuto come Ghost in the Loop.

Aurélien Buiron, alias Ghost in the Loop, rejoint l’équipe de Last Stop Before Heaven en tant que compositeur.

What if glaciers had a voice?

Aurélien Buiron, aka Ghost in the Loop, joins the Last Stop Before Heaven team as composer. Using data from the LSBH scientists, including glaciologist Heidi Sevestre, he will sonify Svalbard’s glaciers and let them be heard.

A sound artist, he captures the hidden voice of glaciers. In 2023, he recorded Le Chant de la Glace beneath the Zinal glacier in Switzerland, returning in 2024 for the live performance L’imaginaire des Glaciers. That same year he released the EP CRYOSPHERE, with half of its profits donated to EarthPercent.

🧊 "Glaciers do not melt in silence. Maybe we are the ones who have stopped hearing them."

✍️ I wrote these words for Last Stop Before Heaven, the documentary project by Karine Feuillard and Benoît Delfosse. What you hear in the background is the glacier itself.

💧 From 2016 to 2018, glaciologist Léo Decaux continuously measured the water level in three cavities of the Hansbreen glacier, in Svalbard. Ghost in the Loop set this data to music and turned those measurements into a score: as the water rises, the piano, bass, and pad notes rise with it. As it falls, they fall too. 🎹

🌊 The piece ends on the Mer de Glace, recorded with a hydrophone on the night of 20 April 2026.

🎧 Sound on.

MELT – A synthesizer played by glacier melting waters 🧊🎛️

Aurélien Buiron, aka Ghost In The Loop, doesn’t just record glaciers: he plays with them. Using hydrophones and contact microphones placed in the ice and meltwater, he captures cracks and flowing water and feeds them into his modular synthesizer. The glacier itself drives the music, in real time.

A piece to be heard as a sonic testimony to the melting of Alpine glaciers.

🎶 Aurélien composes the music for Last Stop Before Heaven and will work in technical collaboration with Nadia Simon on the project.

Freeze frame? No. Frozen time.

Last April, our initial tests with the Sony FX6 camera allow us to evaluate the camera, its accessories, and our solar-powered battery-charging protocol under polar conditions.

The Sony FX6 camera is used for the expedition’s two artistic projects.

🎥 The documentary series, co-directed by Benoît Delfosse and Karine Feuillard, chronicles 30 days of complete self-sufficiency through the stories of the nine expedition members.

📸 The photography series focuses on stillness: static frames where the landscape seems to breathe. Movement emerges from the sounds captured in the field, transformed into soundscapes by Ghost in the Loop, featuring the voice of Nadia Simon.

Two artistic approaches, one camera, for a landscape in motion.

Thanks to @visual_impact_france, @sonyprofilmmaking and @sonyfrance for their support.

Neuf regards.

Nine perspectives. One territory.

Last Stop Before Heaven is a documentary series born in the midst of a 30-day polar expedition, filmed in the vast expanse of Svalbard. No chronological narrative here: each episode explores the region through the eyes of a team member, moving between contemplation, climate science and group dynamics.

The experience becomes the writing. The landscape becomes the time.

Goal: Departure in March 2027. Follow the journey as we build the project.
