I got to the end of a chapter of Polly Atkin's beautiful book, The Company of Owls, and fell asleep with our new greyhound friend Polly Pocket's paw on me, and my hand on her sleeping head. This is not a reflection on Polly Atkin's book, which is a delight in every way, but on how my "fibromyalgic" body is in the evening these days after two days in school. I am so thankful for my Wednesdays off. They are stepping stones which currently enable me to get through the week - mostly. Polly Pocket is teaching me a lot about how to keep fit even if I can't keep well. Polly Atkin is providing, in chapter after lucid chapter, such a powerful sense of validation. There is one chapter in particular which resonates powerfully with my own feelings of bewilderment during the stresses of the time when I too was "still trying to avoid an airborne illness once most people decide[d] it cannot and should not be avoided... Increasingly, it is easier to spend time with the owls than with people who are living such a different reality from mine. I cannot forget every time they have said they could not bear to live as I live, or that lives like mine are not worth conserving." I am grateful that I do have friends and colleagues who do accommodate the vagaries of my "invisible illness", and that I work for a school that is very responsive to my needs, but we still live in a society that is predicated on forging ahead regardless. And I'm not sure that my illness really is so "invisible" when I can be seen to conk out like this on a regular basis. "Fibromyalgic" is in inverted commas above because the vague diagnoses, also, keep on proliferating, but they don't stop everything from hurtling forward around me at breakneck speed. One of the things I love about greyhounds is that though they know how to zoom around alarmingly, they are also very, very good at resting. by @giles.watson.7

The beautiful Arts and Crafts influenced Mattie Furphy House was the perfect venue for the launch of Karen Lowry's @kazzalow hugely powerful book of poetry, This Fragile Thing, and the Perth launch of my Eungedup: A Wetland Summer Diary. I'm hugely grateful to @wapoets for supporting both books, and for choosing such a delightful venue. Sarah Martha (Mattie) Furphy, an accomplished artist in copper-work, lived in the house after it was built in 1907. It is still full of life, thanks to the Fellowship of Australian Writers WA. Thank you too, to our deeply receptive and supportive audience. Karen's reading was powerful: I hope her searingly honest work reaches the audience that writing is such integrity deserves. Visually and typographically, it is also deeply innovative. How appropriate that such a book was launched in this venue - and the peace and comparative seclusion of the house was the perfect environment for celebrating my dragonfly, kingfisher and bittern friends, too. #wapoets by @giles.watson.7

Very much looking forward to this shared event tomorrow with @kazzalow. The two works deal with very different sets of experience, but I think there is going to be a shared humanity which will make them resonate. Everyone who is likely to see this post will know already what my book is about, so here are the details on Karen's: "When Karen Lowry was 16, her grandfather was convicted of sexually abusing her. This poetry collection is a raw, unflinching testimony created from the wreckage. Darkly funny, vulnerable, and often confronting, Karen blends memoir, poetry and collage to give language back to the unspeakable. This Fragile Thing is Karen's own act of witness: what breaks us leaves evidence." by @giles.watson.7
