GUIDED DISTRACTIONS is a course to encourage different forms of creative and spatial experimentation.

- Learn the GD methodology, a non-linear process mixing many mediums, from poetry to collage, to explore critical spatial questions
- Expand your creative toolbox, and integrate more emergent and experimental thought into your work
- Work alongside peers in the studio, with guidance from @rezaniik to create (and potentially exhibit) your experimental piece.

All parts will take place in-person at BAAA (300 Campbell Avenue, Unit 114).

This course has 4 parts; you may register for all parts , or two parts of your choice, Part 1 is mandatory for all. All parts will take place in-person at BAAA (300 Campbell Avenue, Unit 114). The dates for each part are as follows:

Aug 6 – Part 1: Intro, Theory, and Context introduces GUIDED DISTRACTIONS as an experimental methodology with context/history
Aug 13 – Part 2: Collection brings participants to an urban site visit, collecting data through a variety of tools such as sketching, photography, audio, etc.
Aug 20 – Part 3: Poetic Play uses narrative, poetry, and list-making to explore what was collected from the site survey.
Aug 27 – Part 4: Layered Imagining is an exercise in collage, re-assembling images, audio, and objects to provoke new thoughts and critical questioning.
Aug 29 – Part 5: Sharing will be an opportunity for participants to use the BAAA space to share their work, and engage in critical dialogue and conversation.

A super late post but here’s a glimpse of what went down for GD4.0 (@guideddistractions) student exhibition in April at @collisiongallery as the finale to my seminar course at @uoftdaniels

I’m still digesting the depth of the work and the conversations that were had with all the wonderful guests who came through. I’m aiming to post the individual works eventually and a publication will be in the works soon.

Thanks to all the students (all 40 of you) who trusted the process and me. And thanks to all the guests who generously offered their time - grateful for all of you. I learn a lot from each GD iteration, about pedagogy and the importance of unlearning a whole lot of stuff 🙏🏽
