Thinking about this work today as I was updating the website - 🪑🥘 I had the privilege of creating and performing 𝒮𝑜𝒻𝓇𝑒𝒽 𝒻𝑜𝓇 𝒯𝓌𝑜 a year ago and I still think about it … it was deeply important for me as I continue to understand and uncover the tensions in my identity - thanks to @noabrons and @critical.distance for your support & allowing me to make this work. Thanks to @milesrufelds for capturing the performance thru film (that I have yet to finalize) 😬

“Reza Nik’s sofreh for two references both Iranian food and drink carts and ‘Sofreh’, a loose term translated to a textile on which food is served but that often functions as a shorthand for various preparations, practices, ceremonies and rituals. This improvisational performance is mediated through a roving structure that considers the spatial facets of food and feasting as narrated through diasporic and intergenerational experiences and memories.”

Poetry Night 013 - the Music of Things

I got reminded of a famous phrase in a famous book on the first scene at the opening it goes like: “in the beginning there was word”
Apparently word seems to have lost some of its meaning in translation- as happens always- and apparently it is a translation from the term “logos” in Greek.
Logos contains much more than just word. It looks to me like the possibility of being, a movement, and a synchronization.
So why not say in the beginning there was music?
Is not everything a music?
And at what point do words begin to grab on it?
And what is an original move-ment?

And this is yet another pretty random observation on how to situate the necessity of music.
And yet falling in the true cliche that music keeps us alive.

a message to all the “young” creatives who are freelancing or juggling a bunch of contracts but haven’t spent time to reflect on how to manage these multiple obligations. Don’t shoot yourself in the foot by overpromising and pretending like you know what you’re doing - humility & honesty will get you further. Especially for those who also need the money and don’t come from wealth 🫶🏽🫠 by @rezaniik

5 years of Umi🦄💗🎂🎈🛹

This year was the year I decided to bring Umi to the studio more often, to pick him up early from school/daycare, or to just bring him with me from the morning. I really wanted him to feel more comfortable with the space and all the people that are a part of @baaa______baaa @sheeep.studio and to be able to spend more time together. The first few attempts proved to me that I obviously needed to adjust my workflow and expectations - it wasn’t easy to do that when I’m juggling so much…. But I really didn’t want him to just be sitting there on a screen for hours while I continued my day as I normally would… I wanted to keep him engaged and to show him bits of what we do in the studio and also what he can do in a space that cultivates creativity and encourages all sorts of play… some days work better for me than others but I want to continue to experiment with this because it has become more of a priority. I remember this artist I used to follow (who’s name escapes me) say “spend time with your kids or someone else will” and that has stuck with me…. I want to be able to rewire my brain to allow the childcare distractions to happen while I still get the things done that I need to - a kind of @guideddistractions to be honest - next level parameter-based creative experiment. 😅

I’m sharing this on his birthday instead of the regular bday shoutout because maybe it helps other creative parents who are running their own thing, or if people assume it’s impossible, or non parents to comprehend a little more the real behind the scenes mental juggling we do to keep things going…. And to also archive for my future self - I’m lucky to be able to do this and to have made a practice that is kinda a big kid playground…… 🐑🎪I can’t wait to see how this year goes and what new tricks we learn. And to hopefully bring more creative parents into the space too - 🫶🏽
