Humbled to be teaching my research seminars/studios at two institutions this semester on the same day! Excited to work with all 50 students and to get to know them all .

A few weeks ago we wrapped up GD5.0 (@guideddistractions) at @sheeep.school , a 4 week version where we met one evening per week to learn some experimental techniques and to play - to push some thoughts through - to create….We concluded the module with an evening of sharing space, our thoughts & projects. It was a wholesome night and I’m grateful for everyone who was involved throughout the weeks even if you only signed up for one or two sessions….😬 …. Thanks to the SHEEEP.school crew for helping coordinate everything 🐑💗- it was our first longer series - I appreciate you - and thanks to all the participants for trusting us and opening up - I learnt a lot from you and I’m looking forward to continuing these conversations. GD6.0 probably coming soon sometime this fall (November-ish)

GUIDED DISTRACTIONS is a course to encourage different forms of creative and spatial experimentation.

- Learn the GD methodology, a non-linear process mixing many mediums, from poetry to collage, to explore critical spatial questions
- Expand your creative toolbox, and integrate more emergent and experimental thought into your work
- Work alongside peers in the studio, with guidance from @rezaniik to create (and potentially exhibit) your experimental piece.

All parts will take place in-person at BAAA (300 Campbell Avenue, Unit 114).

This course has 4 parts; you may register for all parts , or two parts of your choice, Part 1 is mandatory for all. All parts will take place in-person at BAAA (300 Campbell Avenue, Unit 114). The dates for each part are as follows:

Aug 6 – Part 1: Intro, Theory, and Context introduces GUIDED DISTRACTIONS as an experimental methodology with context/history
Aug 13 – Part 2: Collection brings participants to an urban site visit, collecting data through a variety of tools such as sketching, photography, audio, etc.
Aug 20 – Part 3: Poetic Play uses narrative, poetry, and list-making to explore what was collected from the site survey.
Aug 27 – Part 4: Layered Imagining is an exercise in collage, re-assembling images, audio, and objects to provoke new thoughts and critical questioning.
Aug 29 – Part 5: Sharing will be an opportunity for participants to use the BAAA space to share their work, and engage in critical dialogue and conversation.

I’m still digesting the depth of the work and the conversations that were had with all the wonderful guests who came through. I’m aiming to post the individual works eventually and a publication will be in the works soon.

Thanks to all the students (all 40 of you) who trusted the process and me. And thanks to all the guests who generously offered their time - grateful for all of you. I learn a lot from each GD iteration, about pedagogy and the importance of unlearning a whole lot of stuff 🙏🏽

Trading Floor 2.0 @tradingfloooooor launched last night. Our ongoing collaboration with @newcurrency & @collisiongallery is back for the second year. It kicked off with an amazing exhibition, film screening and talk with New York based artist @marsoverus. Check it out, it is on for the next few days (or longer)

We developed a new furniture concept that we are excited about. It follows along the organic nature of TF, it is going to be an ongoing experiment over the next couple of months as we design and build more. (Thanks @dimaghazal for the fabrication help) More info & documentation on all that soon.

Guided Distractions (ARC465) exhibition and final reviews begins today at @collisiongallery ✨

This is a fourth year undergraduate seminar/studio at the Daniels Faculty led by Assistant Professor Reza Nik @rezaniik. It’s focused on alternate design processes while addressing socio-political and spatial injustices in the urban setting. It is in its fourth iteration exploring vacant spaces in the city of Toronto and thinking about architecture beyond buildings

Gethomesafe is a collective project created by Aisling Beers, Maya Freeman, and Xavier Fox. They are undergraduate architecture students working alongside the supervision of Reza Nik in his course ‘Guided Distractions 3.0’ at the University of Toronto’s Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design.

Through an experimental approach, gethomesafe focuses on the issue of night safety within the urban residential fabric of Toronto, which saw an increase in gender based violence in the summer of 2020.

With a specific interest in the act of walking, their main objective is to increase awareness on this issue in an effort to evoke further conversation on the ways design can be implemented to create a safer space within the urban residential night for women, trans, and gender non-binary folk.

Gethomesafe believes that community-based research best informs their work, and thus cenering the conversation around those who have been, and continue to be directly affected by this issue is critical. Before considering intervention, their primary concern is to listen and accurately represent the individuals that the space must serve.

Through the anonymous act of marking out moments and places within the city that have evoked feelings of insecurity, safety, comfort, and discomfort, this map materializes as a safe space for public contribution.

Anyone is free to contribute and use this space to anonymously share their personal experiences and memories.... (continued in comments)

@guideddistractions Experiment 2D＞3D
Our 3D object transposes the model of a block city onto a cityscape made using laser-cut and hand-cut pieces of wood, cardboard and acrylic. The object builds on the gestures of Superstudio and how formal interventions directly engage with existing landscapes by transposing a superstructure. The block city in particular expresses an interest in the “grid” as a mediating element between a utopian urban scheme and the urban reality, but this relationship is not expressed in parallel terms, rather as an oblique interaction with the city.

This intervention defamiliarizes the city by introducing abstract, self-contained elements into the fabric. This image is mirrored in the monitors, suggesting a feedback loop between the imaginations and realities made in both real and hyperreal domains.
