Islamic practises scientifically proven to regulate your child’s nervous system.

These practises calm and regulate the child by calming and regulating the adult. This is because the child’s nervous system mirrors that of their caregivers. Subhanallah, we have “mirror neurons” in the brain that mean feelings are literally contagious.

Some of these practises do not just help a parent and child calm down in the present, but with consistent use, can also impact their ability to regulate their emotions in the future. This is because they help to rewire the brain 🧠 ✨

While we do not need scientific evidence for these practises, I always find it interesting when neuroscience, attachment theory and “brain friendly” discipline methods confirm what we know Islam already teaches.

The practises are
1) Reciting Quran x Melodic intonation:
Similar to soothing lullabies, the melodic recitation of Quran soothes and calms the nervous system.

2) Allowing each limb to rest in its place in salah before moving to the next position x Moving slowly:
The Montessori method teaches instructors to “move slowly” and “speak slowly” and rightly so. Doing so signals safety to the body, whilst rushing can be dysregulating.

3) Khushoo’ in salah x Mindfulness:
Focusing single mindedly on prayer is a type of mindfulness (being aware of the present moment) This is useful for issues such as anxiety, depression, stress and more. Regular mindfulness practise is said to rewire the brain creating long lasting benefits.

4) Daily Adhkaar x Affirmations:
It is sunnah to recite certain dhikr (remembrance of Allah) after each prayer. In education, we sometimes use affirmations, which are short positive statements designed to be repeated regularly to encourage positive thinking. When you reflect on the meanings of some of the prescribed adhkaar, they are faith affirming.

There are countless other practises I could mention and link to scientific evidence for regulating both a parent and a child’s nervous system. But I will keep it short and sweet in shaa Allah

Thank you for reading my reflections. If you got this far, drop a 🤲🏽 emoji in the comments by @hanashersi

Today I was feeling exhausted, and quite frankly, overwhelmed.

By Allah’s mercy, I had an interaction with a sister today that reminded me of the quote by ibn al-Qayyim:

“If you are sincere in your aim, you will find the aid of Allah surrounding you”

& just like that, my compass was reset 🧭🤍

Tawakkal 🔑
Tie your camel 🐪
Check your intention ✅
Seek His aid 🤲🏽

An advice to myself first and foremost.
