Something wildly beautiful and so meaningful is happening next week 🐚 Lucie from @shellegance has curated a most exceptional fundraiser for @iamwater_foundation - an auction of magnificent shells painted by wonderful artists and ocean lovers. There are some true collectors items here, I kid you not! Proceeds from this auction will go to the work of getting more young South Africans to experience their ocean. If New York is the city that never sleeps then I’m a New Yorker! 🫠 Perfect storm of jet lag and community and 48 hours is more than enough time! Catching tail end of Climate Week, connecting with change-maker friends, old friends, new friends and as always that resounding YES this city offers me. Discussing @iamwater_foundation partnerships and resource strengthening, unpacking impact vs reach, listening and learning from remarkable elders and activists all the while getting completely drenched moving from venue to venue with @cristinmarona showing up as friend and context deepener. Yes to climate/ health / conservation conversations. Finding @finisterre family here also (thank you @larrystafford_ for an evening of utter joy and connection) @rossannafiguera hosting YGL wind down with a red sunset and generosity, playing @comebackcatz (cards against sexism!) and more. Fifteen years ago I came to the Baa Atoll in the Maldives for the first time. This year is my 6th visit and I am here with my family, still in absolute awe of this place and the magnificent mantas that come here each September in staggering numbers. That’s why today, 17 September is World Manta Day.

#WorldMantaDay reminds us why the Maldives is one of the best places on Earth to witness these graceful creatures up close. This year we are celebrating at @nhcollectionmaldivesreethi where we are surrounded by some of the richest manta habitats in the Indian Ocean - and just a short journey away lies Hanifaru Bay, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in Baa Atoll and one of the world’s largest known manta ray feeding aggregation sites.

When the currents and plankton blooms align, hundreds of reef mantas can gather here in a single tide - an unforgettable underwater spectacle found almost nowhere else on the planet.

Postcards from Paradise 🏝️

This was our second time back at Avani+ Fares in the Maldives. Hosting freediving courses, sharing conservation stories and spending time in the blue blue water with our kids. What a privilege that this is part of our job. 💙

(Not shared… late night emailing, photo editing and video downloading, tantruming kids and so on. I mean, it’s real life right? And that’s great! Perfection is in being present, appreciating all of it, and breathing in real gratitude.)

The past couple of days have we have been hosting freediving courses on beautiful @avanimaldives and as always, it has been a deeply humbling time. Courage truly isn’t the absence of fear… it’s being scared but trying anyway. A young man overcoming a childhood water trauma, a courageous mom stepping into the unknown so the next generation knows they can do anything they set their hearts on, an ex competitive swimmer exploring joyful ways of being back in water. Sharing freediving isn’t just one of the many things I call ‘work’, it’s a privilege to be a part of someone’s ocean journey 💙 Thank you for your trust 🙏 If you’re also a freediver, share what attracted you to freediving, I’d love to hear! For me it was a burning curiosity of what my body was capable of doing on one breath… and of course my childhood dreams of being a mermaid 🧜🏻‍♀️
