The conversations no one else hears... In Philip Venables’ 4.48 Psychosis, the boundaries between a person’s inner world and the stage begin to dissolve, giving voice to thoughts and emotions that often remain unspoken. @vakamamakia, @hannahedmunds1, @jacquelynstucker and director @harriet_taylor reflect on the vulnerability of bringing Sarah Kane’s words to life, and the intimate connection between performers and audience. #TheRoyalOpera #448Psychosis #PhilipVenables #Opera #RoyalBalletAndOpera by @harriet_taylor
Tonight is our ante-penultimate performance of 4.48 Psychosis at the Linbury. 🖤 Cosplaying as Ted at the RBO Insights event earlier this month was just one of the joys of this production — sitting alongside Phil and Naomi, and speaking about Sarah Kane’s work with @drflorawillson, was a huge privilege. I’ve thought about this piece and its legacy a lot these last few months and it feels important to say: we laughed while we made this. We cried, we supported each other, we took responsibility for one another and for the work, and we always looked for the light. It’s undeniably tragic, but 4.48 is also much stranger, funnier, more frighteningly recognisable, more human, and more alive than that. And the extraordinary women you’ll see onstage hold all of that with grace and humor and love. I’m in awe of them. I hope we see you in the Linbury. ☕️🪳💡 Composer: @philipvenables Text: Sarah Kane Director: @tedddrh Conductor: @woonaomiwoo Asst. Director: @harriet_taylor Asst. Earlier this year I was invited to speak on the #InternationalWomensDay panel at Covent Garden as an opera director. (That alone was a pinch me moment! ✨) But picking up on something the lovely @speranzascappucci had just said (and maybe accidentally roasting myself in the process 👀🤣) , I ended up talking about how differently storytelling and time behave across opera, theatre, and film, and what that means for performers and directors. (Welcome to the inside of my brain…) I’m honestly always expanding my thinking on this. The producer side of my brain wants to provide structure. The artist wants to leave room for a genuine experience. The director who works across all three forms just wants to support my performers in any way I can. And I guess the Aquarius in me wants to know what y’all think about it…? 🎭🎼🎬 by @harriet_taylor
Spent six days this summer pulling Henry IV apart in a room full of chairs. (And still sat on the floor.. ) 🪑👑 The play is already obsessed with transformation, alcohol, fathers and children, resentment, shame, forgiveness, relapse into old identities, and whether we can change and still be loved. I’m obsessed with the people in these pictures, Lady Percy’s monologue, directing Shakespeare, and using theatre as a force for identification. So we tried looking at Hal, Hotspur, Falstaff, King Henry and Lady Percy through 12-step recovery: people still suffering, people who have recovered, dry drunks, qualifiers, people stuck at Step One, and the wives, fathers, kings and mates indiscriminately affected by the heart-wrenching disease of addiction. We spent the week stage fighting (something else I’m obsessed with), sharing, translating, sitting in circles, improvising, devising, soul-searching, and moving. So Henry XII was born. It’s still very much in development, but there’s definitely something here. Huge love to everyone who came into the room and helped me find it. Most especially Kristin Winters; an old friend, an inspiring collaborator, a hype woman, a fucking breathtaking Hal - a muse. So grateful to have found my way to @operahollandpark this summer. When beloved colleagues like @ruthymuchilland invite you to come work for them, you go. Because in return for Associate Directing ‘Ballo’, I got to meet (and love) @rodulagaitanou, learn a piece that’s so good it’s already in my diary again (👀 @royalballetandopera), and most importantly, experience the sweet summer vibes and fierce camaraderie of OHP first hand. I can’t wait to be back under the tent.. 💙 by @harriet_taylor
4.48 Psychosis It felt really special to be part of the Sarah Kane summer in London this August. Seeing Cleansed at the @almeida_theatre (cheering that creative team on from afar) and getting to work on Philip Venables’ stunning 4.48 Psychosis for the Linbury, it’s been a deep and heavy summer of thinking about why we make what we make + who we make it with + who for: what’s the point? For all that this process has been gut-wrenching, it has also been totally life-affirming. I’ve met and worked with the extraordinary folx pictured who I’m keeping forever. Being trusted to steward the production through its final week of studio rehearsals was an epic challenge and privilege. What I didn’t clock till I was in it, though, was that when Ted and our gorgeous rep, Ben, had to leave us during that final week, I found myself holding a room overwhelmingly full of remarkable womxn; It’s a ratio I don’t get to enjoy often, and it really did feel special. (I think the fact that you could confuse our morning check in for a womxns circle says it all..) I can’t wait to come back to the Linbury with the production in October, not least because that theatre still feels a bit like home to me. Getting to be reunited there with Veena Akama-Makia feels like a particularly beautiful full-circle moment. (Full Moon in March hive, rise. 🌕🐝) This show feels like a step towards unifying my theatre past with my opera present, and definitely shows me what kind of work I want to be making in the future; ambitious, difficult, collaborative, alive. Postdramatic theatre and criminally good music and Britney Spears and girlhood. Because mostly I just really, really want to work with these gals again. And that is the point. — Director: @tedddrh Conductor: @woonaomiwoo Composer: @philipvenables Fight/Intimacy: @rcannie_ltd AD: @harriet_taylor AC: @micah__gleason Reps: @bensmithkeys_ + @berrakdyer Producers: @g_cook, @a.darraghkelly, @chibbs Singers: @jacquelynstucker, @hannahedmunds1, @vakamamakia, @lozbyoung, @martafontanals, @sophiamburgos3 SMs: @harrietkennedy4174, @tobias.millard by @harriet_taylor

Chi al par di me contenta? 💍🚪👰🏻‍♀️🍂📍🕯️💐🤎 Happy closing to our Figaro family. This is the second time I’ve been part of bringing David McVicar’s ‘Figaro’ back and I’m still pinching myself. What a privilege. What a mammoth. What a rich and living and breathing thing. I’ve pored over the score, walked every track (and missed cues in all of them), and watched it from every corner of the building. What I love most, though, is seeing new casts, new audiences, and new teams collide with it and make it their own. (It also happens to be the set we used for my first Jette Parker Artists Programme Summer Performance, so in a funny way, a lot of my opera life has happened in and around these walls.) Boy do I know, and love, this show… by @harriet_taylor

💜🥂💚🧙🏼‍♀️💛🕶️ Flora, Fauna, Merryweather. Sequins, throws, + the sacred art of SCHLEPPING. Iris x Hermes. St. Anne’s in the Bywater. Through rose-coloured Iris glasses, it looks like this: Women building a world. A love letter in hot glue, glitter, and sheer force of will. Every year I come home and recognise it more clearly: this is where my taste comes from. Ritual. Excess. Generosity. Performance as offering. The scale, the texture, the permission to be maximal, the devotion to spectacle and community at once. I learned how to make work by watching this. So proud to be part of Iris. And to be from New Orleans. That’s my girl. by @harriet_taylor
