While at Skowhegan, I made a lot of things I didn’t anticipate. Some things are finding their way into the world, some I’m still figuring out how to translate, and some could only ever exist there.

One of the most surprising things I made was also the first thing I made. Instrument still feels like the wrong word for what it was, but I turned the side of my studio into something like one. I wrapped used electrical wire around the loose nails on the exterior studs of Simon 01 and tuned each line with things I found on campus and objects I brought with me. Together, they made two distinct notes, sometimes a half step apart, sometimes more. Sometimes the notes would shift as I plucked and sometimes the string would snap as I played. Other times I’d find one snapped by someone else. I could always tell, because there would always be a note with a sorry attached.

So I spent the summer building and fixing and testing, unsure of what it was or what it meant. As the summer progressed and I found myself anywhere but my studio, two patient spiders, one missing a leg, slowly started to anchor their orbed webs to my vacant one. In the final weeks and days, as I returned to play, they felt the vibrations surge from my strings into theirs. They would suddenly dart down to locate the disturbance, and suddenly I understood the patience that Eduardo spoke of during our first studio visit.

I’m still unsure how, or if, it’ll find a way out into the world. But for now, here’s a sign that it existed. A sign that, in the midst of a hot, wilding summer, I found a way to speak without words to things that never needed them in the first place.

I was four when I left Guatemala and I haven’t returned since. I’m still unsure when, if ever, I’ll be able to go back. It’s hard to describe the feeling of having a piece of myself back home when my own body can’t experience it. But I’m honored and deeply moved to be included in “Un Lugar Para Existir” which will be on view @lanuevafabricagt from October 10th, 2026 to February 14th, 2027. I’m so grateful to the entire team and the curators for their work on this ambitious exhibition and to Lily for so kindly smuggling my work into Guatemala and Marilyn for reminding me that my body will always remember the land even if my mind can’t. taken in La Nueva Fábrica by @haslergomez

Willfully joined a cult this summer; I’m not too mad about it. Sorry in advance if I start hysterically crying when you ask how it was. Also, I’m well aware I have a tan.

Here’s an excerpt from “ELEGIES AFTER DUSK” where a found LED light bulb is illuminated by a flashlight that has had its batteries all but drained, leading the light to flicker sporadically as it finishes dying. taken in Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture by @haslergomez

“Carriage” is open today from 1-4pm at @lvl3official

To make these works, I used a formula for calculating the total skin area in square meters of a human body. I took the measurements and made floor plan diagrams of every home I had ever lived in, allowing memory and time spent in each home to distort the scale of the floor plans and rooms. I reassembled the shapes and made a pelt using my used dryer lint sheets and other materials that mimic shed skin. The resulting material easily scars when folded, leaving lines that reference the ribbing of my sock. I turn to socks because they know our bodies well, they trace where and how we’ve been, how we’ve felt, but you also can’t always tell which sock is right and which is left. The perfect sock is really both, the foot is what ultimately decides, but it can always change its mind too.

Some more details from “Carriage” on view in Chicago at @lvl3official through May 3rd. “UNTITLED” is comprised of found and collected corrugated cardboard that’s been bathed and had its interior skin separated from its corrugation. This interior side is reinforced with wood glue and then painted the same color as the gallery floor and then hand engraved using vinyl wooden flooring, my bone folder, and friction. The pieces sit with the ground, mimicking the idiosyncrasies of the gallery’s floor: its lines, its cracks, and its wear.
