“Queer people have always existed, in every era and country. We are surrounded by so much pain and violence in the present, and it can be hard to imagine things were ever different. ‘Jhumkewali’ reminds us that we have queer elders who have survived and found love and joy. If they can, so can we.”

We made this play because we believe that queer joy is powerful, rooted in history, and our greatest tool in imagining a new world for ourselves. We hope you’ll join us in making this world as well. 🩷

‘community this, community that’ but honestly, last night’s reading room really did feel like a small, warm attempt at building a theatre community around supporting queer writers 🥹

what a joy to watch @toto_robin and @utkarshh23 bring the story of chichi to life through their readings 💕 unnnh! was a celebration of queer and trans joy in a world that often tries to suppress the same, and we’re so grateful to @prajeshkashyap_ and @mxsiaan for creating this story and trusting us with it🫶🏽🫶🏽

finally, a big shoutout to everyone who showed up yesterday! thank you for coming out for conversations, queer theatre and supporting new, original plays ✨

we’ll be back before you know it with the next reading room, so watch this space for more! by @hausofbhaus

〰️〰️〰️

reading room is waiting for you!

are you an lgbtq+ writer?

do you have a play that hasn’t found a stage of its own?

then reading room is for you!

this is a space where you can hear your script read out by actors in front of a small, live audience.

if you’re in mumbai and you’ve written:
✍🏽 a new & original play script in Hindi or English
✍🏽 a full-length play (max 90 mins) OR a work-in-progress (min 20 mins)

send us your play with your name, location and a few lines about yourself to hausofbhaus@gmail.com!

DEADLINE: 17 August 2026

submission guidelines:

🔎 we're looking for new & original plays in hindi or english
🔎 anything from works in progress (min 20 mins) to full-length (up to 90 mins) scripts are welcome!

the reading room is now open for submissions 📖

we’re opening up the haus for queer writers with new plays!

hear your play read out loud by actors 👥 (think: microdosing the experience of a show without the stakes of a full-fledged production)

send us:
* new, original, previously unproduced plays in hindi/english
* full length plays (max 90 min) OR works-in-progress (min 40 mins)
* some information about yourself (name, contact details, location, a short bio)

(note: as of right now, the readings will be held in-person in mumbai. you’re welcome to send in plays from other cities, but only if you can also be available for the offline reading in mumbai.)

it doesn’t matter if it’s your 1st play or your 40th: if you’re queer and have pages that need a stage, this is a room for you!

email us at hausofbhaus@gmail.com
we can’t wait to read your work ✉️🤓

🍿 About this month’s play🍿
‘Jhumkewali’ literally translates to ‘girl with earrings.’ In this sweet, sapphic play, the classic Indian dangler earrings known as ‘jhumkas,’ sold in Bombay’s local trains and markets, become a central motif in the coming-of-age romance between two young students in 1974.

The play will have both English and Japanese subtitles.
