Here’s a little late night recording of a new tune.

Lately I’ve been writing songs direct or paraphrased from scripture but this one felt like it came from somewhere deep. It kinda echoes Psalm 22 that Jesus quoted on the cross.

Throughout the Psalms there is this almost constant theme of crying out to God in times of trouble and struggling to get a response. They don’t sugar coat their experiences with put-on happiness. It’s raw, it’s wrestling with God. And always the answer from God, rather than immediate miraculous relief, is “keep going, you got this, take another step, and another, follow my footprints in the mud.”

Life can be crazy hard. But God’s default mode is not in the business of magic get of jail cards, he’s in the business of making men and women who are courageous, tenacious and rise to meet the challenges. He’s a good father. by @haydenshearman

This run was special this morning. Cutting fresh tracks through fresh snow on one of my all time favourite trails.

2 degrees, 20mins till sunset, 2 dumbbells in the car, a small patch of sand on the desert road … guerilla gyming mid road trip at its best.

I must’ve looked hilarious from the road.

It’s amazing how good it feels to break up a long drive with a little blast in cold air feeling the lungs and limbs getting warmed up when there’s snow falling nearby on the mountains.

Fitness doesn’t need to be fancy and all planned out. Do what you can with what youve got. Your body doesn’t know the difference. taken in Desert Road Summit SH1, 1074m by @haydenshearman

Had a fantastic weekend commentating at the @rotoruamarathon with @athleticsnz @maaya.i1 and @holly_manning

With these weekends away I often try to extended the trip a little to find moments to connect in the beauty of nature, hear from my Creator and recharge the soul.

Here are some highlight moments from this extended weekend starting with two trail runs on Mt Ruapehu, the Kids Mini Marathon, an epic glassy paddle at the Blue Lake, 11 hours on the mic at the Rotorua Marathon with so many special moments and heroic efforts from the runners (including these two ladies finishing off their marathon at 6pm after starting at 8am), and one final run Rotorua trails in the mist.

Finished off the weekend listening to a great message from @benkendrewnz on Isaiah 6 on the drive home waiting at road works. Great word Ben!

And they’re off 🍯🔥

The start line energy for the Honey Half was unreal — nerves, excitement, and a whole lot of heart.

From first steps to finish lines, this is what it’s all about 🙌🏻🏁

The crew bringing the vibes at the @egmont_honey @egmonthoneyhalfmarathon this morning!

Great to join @camillebuscomb on the mic calling 1200 people over the finish line in New Plymouth with @hepsfx spinning the tunes!

This event is lots of fun. If you’re looking for a fun vibes half marathon definitely lock this one in for next April. It sells out fast so get in quick! taken in Ngamotu Beach by @haydenshearman

And that’s a wrap on my 9th summer of commentating track and field with an epic weekend at the @athleticsnz NZ track and field champs featuring the @trackstarsnz night.

This summer I’ve had over 50 hours on the mic, more than 100 hours of prep, 2 lost voices, zero embarrassing on air coughing fits, and many unbelievable performances called including @sam.ruthe and @samueltanner_ battles, an epic long jump comp with @shay.veitch and @felix.mcd , a national record with @tom.tepuni , seeing @zoe__hobbs get her 10th 100m title in a row and @tomwalshnzl his millionth national title and @hamishkerrhj showing nz kids that kiwis can fly.

It’s such a privilege to be part of all these amazing athletes doing amazing things here in NZ!

This summer I’ve been mostly on the stadium announcing rather than the stream or broadcast, which has been fun to build vibes, but I do miss the OG days of the livestream with @thestreamshop and Hamish Meacheam.

Over the winter I’ll be doing some announcing at running races around the country and otherwise enjoying having semi healthy vocal chords for some singing and 🎸 taken in The Trusts Arena by @haydenshearman

My first individual Hyrox in the books and boy oh boy that was 🥵 😰

I knew my run fitness wasn’t quite there coming into January so I was focused on hitting some good run workouts and ended up tweaking a calf one week out from Hyrox which almost made me cancel the event. But I made a deal with myself to restrict the 8x1k runs to easy pace and just focus on nailing the stations.

This worked (including getting fastest split of the day on the burpees 👊) up until the heat really hit. After two and a half weeks of absent summer weather I was just totally deconditioned to the heat.

On the rower I was pausing between each stroke to enjoy being close to the fan 😂 and from halfway stopped at every aid station for a drink. I was sweating so much that all the chalk got washed off my hands in the farmers carry and I dropped it five times 😧

So by the time the wall balls arrived I was just in heat management mode.

About 8mins slower than what I thought I could do but it seems like everyone had similar results on the day.

Lessons?
1. Keep the ability to run fast throughout the year.
2. Do more high end aerobic work on the bike and ergs to supplement and replace run workouts (to avoid injuries and improve row and ski efficiency).
3. Prepare specifically for the heat.
4. Enjoy the pain.
5. Train for farmers carries with oil on my hands or garden hoses running down my arms! by @haydenshearman

2016. Much has changed, but much has stayed the same.

I’ve come full circle back to running coaching. Still running, just much slower. Still on the microphone talking about athletics and meeting amazing athletes like Barry Magee. Still loving the joys and challenges of being a dad. Still uncovering the depths of God’s love. Still trying to do my bit to leave the world a better place. by @haydenshearman
