Illustrated a Ukrainian road trip for @solomiyamag written by Iryna Zamuruieva 🌾 The piece follows her traveling with her father across central Ukraine, searching for kurgans, ancient burial mounds that now survive as tiny islands of steppe biodiversity in a sea of industrial monoculture.It’s a story about what’s left of the Ukrainian steppe (almost nothing), and how its erasure comes not only from war, but from decades of extractive farming.This story launches as part of @stackmagazines new project The Mortar, expanding the world of independent publishers they work with (very good news). I’ve been working with Steve at @stackmagazines to launch a newsletter. It’s going to be the best writing from the indie world in your inbox every week. And each one will have a new commissioned illustration to go with it…Commissioning illustration is probably the best part of my job, and with budgets getting more and more challenging, I’m getting less of it, and what budget I have is too valuable to be able to take risks on new artists. SO my plan for this project is to work with the best new illustrators, still in school, just graduated, first job, first editorial commission. Whatever! Let’s work together!There is a fee of £20 at first, but our priority as soon as it launches is to get that up asap. It’s one drawing and I’m aiming for at least 3-4 weeks lead time.Please share this far and wide!
