Industrial Design is fun, exciting, and always evolving. At times it’s unpredictable—and even unfair—but it’s also deeply creative, visual, and tangible. It’s an experience, a strategy, a point of view; something that can feel abstract while remaining grounded in the real world.

Lately I’ve been deep-diving into Apple’s soft-goods muscle—the quiet, intentional layer of their ecosystem that so many people overlook. We talk a lot about their hardware, their materials, their finishes, their precision…but their soft goods are just as calculated, just as thoughtful, and honestly, just as beautiful.

And this reflection comes at the perfect time. Apple recently collaborated with Japanese fashion powerhouse Issey Miyake to release the iPhone Pocket, an accessory that feels both surprising and completely inevitable. A lot of people saw this as a “new direction,” but if you know Apple’s history, the Miyake influence has been there for decades—most famously woven into the very identity of Steve Jobs through the iconic Miyake turtlenecks.

This isn’t a random partnership. It’s a continuation of a design dialogue that’s been happening quietly, intentionally, and with purpose. Apple understands the power of soft goods as extensions of the body, of culture, of fashion—beautiful accents that complete the hardware.

Don’t underestimate their intentions. Their execution in this space is only getting stronger, and honestly, it’s exciting to watch.

People always ask me what my favorite part of Square One is. My answer never changes: the people.

I love reconnecting. I love seeing old faces and meeting new ones. I love the conversations: in the halls, at the after-parties, over lunch, late into dinner. Just real, human connection. That’s what this whole thing is about for me.

Just had the most beautiful Fourth of July ever. I had the chance to visit the Obama Presidential Library and Museum, and it moved me in a way I wasn’t expecting.

Obama set the bar so high for what a president should be that it makes today’s leadership look like a pale imitation by comparison. But beyond that, this campus redefines what a presidential library and museum can be. It’s not just history and facts on display — it’s moving, inspiring, and full of compassion, empathy, and respect. It reminds you that America has always been about “us”, and that the most powerful word in a democracy is “we.” It’s a beautiful reminder that America is made up of everyone, and no insecure leader can ever take that away from us.

Even the architecture is intentional — designed so the experience itself feels shared and communal. If you get the chance to visit this beautiful place, go. I can’t recommend it enough.

We had the pleasure of bringing a brother from another mother — Advanced Design bestie, Offsite champion, and industrial designer at Whipsaw — Carlos Terminel to Chicago, to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, to talk to SAIC IDSA students about “the hard way” and the 13 things he wished he’d known before graduating.

It’s a tough time in the industry right now, and Carlos showed up with real advice and real insights. God bless this man. Thank you for being a beacon in our community.
