Thanks to @heenneeh for bringing us all together and planning a lovely night. It’s always so much fun hanging out with Erin! It was a great evening starting with a nice walk @uva Grounds, delicious drinks by @eljoelcuellar @speakeasycville, scrumptious dinner @blackcowchophouse, awesome conversations, and plenty of laughs. The awe-inspiring wines of @iliana_malihin_winery ! It’s rare to find wines that stir the soul like these do…

Based on the idea of featuring old vine, often mixed-planting vineyards in the mountains of Rethymno, Crete, and always celebrating the indigenous vines of Crete: Liatiko, Vidiano, and Thrapsathiri. These wines are full of flavor and deep power- they tell the story of Crete wine, which dates back thousands of years to ancient Minoa.

Since the 2022 wildfires claimed many of the old pre-phylloxera vineyards, some of the current bottlings feature young vine fruit reborn from the old vineyard sites.

I was lucky enough to meet Iliana, hang out with her mom, and try these unique wines. In Lampini, Iliana has a cafe @tartala_kafeneio , it’s like a sister project of @iliana_malihin_winery and features local cuisine — all telling the story of this region. One of the coolest things about both the wines and the café is that they are part of a rejuvenation and retelling of Crete’s story. You can feel there is an excitement swirling around Rethymno and the reframing of agriculture here. The stirring organic wines of @domainepaterianakis in the wind-blown Peza region of central Crete — this multi-generational winery was the first winery on Crete to become organic, and specializes in the indigenous grapes of Crete, like Vidiano, Kotsifali, and Mandilari. In particularly awesome was the ageworthy Domaine Paterianakis Kotsifali-Mandilari red, and the 3.14 rosé. taken in Domaine Paterianakis-Κτήμα Πατεριανάκη by @heenneeh

I’m blown away by the press history on display at the @koutsogiannopoulos_winemuseum , where you can find pieces of a 1600s era press (😲), depictions of ropes used to hold bunches, traditional basket presses, a rare horizontal basket press, barrel-cleaning chains, and some of the early electronic machinery introduced for pumps.

It’s also absolutely wild to see the grape-treading rooms in the older, multigenerational wineries on the island. These same rooms are found around the Mediterranean, but I haven’t found any winery who still uses their treading room- most people say the last use was in the 1960s or 1970s. Santorini tomatoes are known for their intensity and electric flavor 🍅. They are tiny, grow in volcanic soil, and pull water from mists and salty sea air. Tomato pattys are part of Santorini cuisine, and they hit you like a gallon of grandma’s tomato sauce packed into a little boullionous bite… taken in Finikia Memories Hotel & Restaurant by @heenneeh

Coiled up power and flavor packed into the wines of @canavaroussos - almost ferocious in their explosive energetic aromas and tangy, savory, salty, endless finishes…. Like going on a rollercoaster face first into a bundle of herbs dipped in cinnamon, lemon peel, & saltwater. 🎢 taken in Santorini, Greece by @heenneeh
