Helmz tells a story of the past, present and future of Soul, Funk & R&B through her record collection. We start with the giants of the 70s, explore the shift into Neo-Soul, and land in today’s ever-evolving sound that continues to push these genres forward.

What do Curtis Mayfield, Parliament-Funkadelic, Chaka Khan, Gil Scott-Heron, D’Angelo, Aaliyah and Blood Orange have in common? They have all shaped the story of music as pioneers of their time and are essential ingredients for a soulful, feel-good evening.

Suva is a Helsinki-based DJ, radio host, and singer who has performed in multiple countries. Her lifelong relationship with music creates a space where guests can relax, connect, and fully enjoy the moment. This is part of a research I’m doing on darkness as an aesthetic and visual identity. Focusing mainly on pop culture phenomena, post-punk and goth subcultures from the last five decades. I’ve been working on a series of portraits around this subject for some time now but they shall remain unrevealed for now...🦇
The project is influenced by the work of Jarmo Mäkilä from the 80s and also by Sue Webster and her awesome book 'I Was A Teenage Banshee'. Most recently been inspired by the very cool Helsinki by night exhibition at Hakasalmen huvila by Stefan Bremer.

Installation views from the Synergy group exhibition at the Museum of Technology last October.

Such a treat to create this event together with wonderful people. Definitely one of the most rewarding projects of last year. The sense of community and working together in good company inspired us to do it all over again this year! Grateful for the ongoing collaboration with the Museum of Technology making things possible.

I’m part of the upcoming Synergy Art Fest as an artist, as well as a member of the production and curatorial team. Excited to see what kind of exhibition and event program we’ll end up building. More information will be shared throughout the year on the festivals account @synergy.artfest
