This is hot stuff! It’s a very VERY special edition of XPOSURE with Self-Cut Bangs, sharing their new record Growth Spurts in its entirety, ahead of its release this Friday.
It’s the third record from the Calgary rockers, and oh-so-special in that it’s the first one recorded with the full band as a “unit”. Perhaps best described as loud, hooky, and the best album ever made*, the record is inspired by, and about, the rapid musical, romantic, and familial growth within the band. It’s everything perfect about music. Big hooks, guitars, and hearts painting a picture of growing close, growing a sound, growing up, and growing a human.
Cayley & Shawn are taking over XPOSURE, walking you track-by-track through the record, front-to-back. I (Logan), since catching wind of the record’s production a few years ago, have been pestering the band to make sure we get to play it in its entirety ahead of release. And that day is finally here!
People sometimes ask me, “Logan, what kind of music do YOU like?” and it’s often hard to quantify and qualify exactly what it is I’m attracted to in music. Or rather, at least it was. Now I can just point to Self-Cut Bangs’ Growth Spurts and say: “That! That’s what I like!”

Logan Middleton has spent most of his life obsessed with music. Now, as the host of Xposure on X92.9, he gets to put that obsession to work for Calgary artists.

We talk about growing up as the kid who cared way too much about bands, finding his lane in radio, taking over a show he had listened to since X92.9 launched, and what he has learned from hearing 50 to 100 new submissions in a week. Logan breaks down what catches his ear, why seeing a band live can completely change his read on them, and what that first commercial radio spin can mean for an artist.

We also get into the bigger role Xposure can play. Kue Varo moving from Xposure into the main X92.9 playlist. Other stations paying attention to what X is doing. Shy Friend showing up with a full plan and turning their Xposure appearance into one of Logan’s favourite episodes. And why he thinks Calgary’s music scene has a level of friendship and support that is not necessarily normal in other cities.

With the excellent Polaris Long List dropping this past week, I wanted to share four records I championed in my first year as a juror. While they didn’t make the Long List, the conversation extended far beyond the 40 albums that did. These were the records I was genuinely stoked on, and I think they’re all deserving of a little extra love. Give ’em a spin, I hope you’ll love them as much as I do.

Absolute Losers — In The Crowd
Anyone who knows me knows about my love for bands like Sloan, The Super Friendz, and Thrush Hermit. Boy howdy, this record captures that same feeling perfectly.
Pure power-pop bliss. Jangly guitars, massive hooks, and melodies that stick around long after the record ends. Between these fine folks, The Boojums, The Get Alongs, and others carrying the torch, I’ve seen the future. Have you?

Kue Varo & the Only Hopes — How Everything Feels (and Other Lies)
Heartfelt, funny, and deeply human songwriting from one of this city’s most distinctive voices. Kue has a way of connecting with listeners that feels both profound and relatable, all wrapped in warm, rootsy arrangements. One of those records that feels like an old friend from the very first listen.

Motorists — Never Sing Alone
Motorists continue their streak of making some of the finest guitar pop in the country. Bright, driving melodies meet wistful songwriting, creating a record that feels equally suited for a summer road trip or a late-night headphone listen. Thoughtful, melodic, and endlessly replayable.

Xposure historians might remember when X was lucky enough to premiere the debut album from Kue Varo & The Only Hopes back in 2023. Well, we’re oh-so-lucky again to bring you the band’s sophomore effort, How Everything Feels (And Other Lies), a full week ahead of release.

XPOSURE 150! Maybe that’s just a number, but it’s one that I like. This Sunday will be the 150th edition of Xposure that I’ve produced since taking over the show from my good pal Matt Berry @thechelsearoom. Thinking of all the rad bands & tunes I’ve had the pleasure of spinning on X makes this ol’ heart grow a few sizes. It’s my favourite thing in the world, and I feel so grateful to be in the ears of so many fine folks playing so much music that I love so dearly every Sunday night.
Lucky for everyone listening, I’ve had the opportunity to have so many dear friends finer than me host the show too, as to give a break from my awkward nasal. I couldn’t be happier to have that roster of people include @kuevaro, @shy_friend_, @betaboysband, @themickyjane, @dempsey_bolton, @micahsage_, @thebluexo, @insearchofsasquatchband, @dandybrewing, @jessarcand and so so many more.
They are the Xposure MVPs. My utility infielders. My favourite people. Many of those voices you’ll hear on the Xposure 150 program! So tune in for some familiar folks and kind words?
I got Sloan & Tricky Woo and talked to people a younger Logan could’ve only dreamed about.
The people that I love the most are in my life now because of Xposure - it’s literally given me everything I could ever want, and I will cherish that for the rest of my life.
