It’s my pleasure to introduce my first illustrated children’s book, “J is for Justice” written by by civil rights lawyer, activist, and former president of the Minneapolis NAACP, Nekima Levy Armstrong.

Nekima, @nekimal your work as a civil rights activist prepared our way and through this process. Thank you for persevering through challenges and continuing your mission to help educate children to stand up for what they believe in! I’m honored and grateful we got to journey through this together! Thank you for your faith in my procreate pen to bring Joy to life.

Thank you to Dara Beevas and the team at Wise Ink, @wise_ink for not only tapping me to do such an important work but trusting me to develop Nekima’s beautiful vision. Thank you Crown Shepard, your experiences with your own books shaped our development. Thank you Cindy Laun, because without your beautiful layouts all my drawings would be sitting in a dusty Dropbox folder.

To my family- mom, dad and niece for support during this project, and my friends who provided so much encouragement along the way. Thank you to Pratt BAP, my community in Bed-Stuy and my baristas for asking “How’s the book coming?” You all held me and reminded me that my art is my activism. Thank You immensely!

A new neighbor has arrived on Warren Street!

We’re excited to share that our illuminated sculpture is now installed at Boreum Park (364 Warren St, Brooklyn, NY 11201). This is the second of two sculptures featuring laser cut phrases from Gowanus residents’ stories.

This bright yellow house is comprised of aluminum, steel and acrylic and stands 4ft tall. These illuminated sculptures are yet another public art piece that represents a marker of memory and community for the Dear Neighbor Project.

Boreum Park, 364 Warren St, Brooklyn, NY
Park is open daily, sunrise to sunset + the sculpture is on view through mid December 2025

We invite you to swing by, and reflect on the stories that shape the places we call home.

Stories called by our wonderful journalists, @naeemdouglas_ and @seeangelee_be

On this Juneteenth, I’m reflecting on the honor of participating in @jfkt4 JFK Terminal 4’s Juneteenth Celebration where I showcased my piece “Sasha in the Eye of the Storm” (16x20, acrylic on canvas), dedicated to the freedom fighters in the struggle and honoring the work of artist Sasha Huber @sashahuber

I also had the joy of sharing the children’s book I illustrated, “J is for Justice,” written by Nekima Levy-Armstrong @nekimal, a project rooted in freedom, equity, and education.

It was powerful to be in community with fellow artists, @artbygia @cavierart @film_scrapbook and hear reflections on what Juneteenth means to each of us, and connect with JFK Terminal 4’s leadership and staff.

I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity to honor history through art. 🖤❤️💚

Gridding your blank canvas can seem like you’re doing twice the work but I find it makes approaching the painting composition much smoother and easier to scale the art.

Ty to @mei.ray_ who nailed the method on the first try!

Heres a little glimpse into my actual pace when I paint... it feels much faster than it looks a lot of the time!

Recently, I had my photos taken by @natiahjones at The Jones Experience studio session. Natiah is naturally brilliant and it was her suggestion to pose with a piece of my artwork, so boom! If you like this portrait of Flat Top Lady I have prints available. ☝🏽☝🏽 The original shown here is oil paint on wood panel.
Shoutout to @neriahmc and the beautiful space at @colabstudiosnyc and everyone that made the experience feel warm and full of community. taken in CoLab Studios by @hiccupbk
