Last week, we had such a magical evening celebrating @mookntaka and their Friends from the Canal. We visited each Friend to watch them officially emerge into the neighborhood, and toasted this wonderful project back at Van Alen HQ. (Special shout out to the custom colorful monkey bread from @cafemarsbk – so on theme!)

Created by @mookntaka, Friends from the Canal responds to Gowanus’ state of flux. As the area transforms, this installation imagines friendly, curious creatures emerging from the Gowanus Canal to investigate the commotion and meet their neighbors. Be sure to visit each Friend the next time you’re nearby:

💜 Loofa: @nychagram Wyckoff Gardens, Nevins St & Warren St

🧡 Pebbles: @gowanuswharf, 3rd Ave & Union St

🩵 Shelby: @cafemarsbk, 3rd Ave & President St

Friends from the Canal is produced by @van_alen and made possible by @nycsmallbiz @nyculture @nyscouncilonthearts. Learn more at the link in bio, including how you can engage with the project through a local scavenger hunt.

J IS FOR JUSTICE: A Social Justice Book for Kids written by @nekimal illustrated by @hiccupbk. Adorable Baby Joy loves her city as much as she loves her Mama and Daddy and “brown sugar oatmeal with apples and peaches.” And she discovers, like all kids can, that she loves protesting with the people who live in her city just as much. This picture book is all about rising up for justice as a community with engaging paintings the make it come alive. It even includes some chants for kids at the back, yes! “No more lies, no more hate, Diversity makes America great!”
Thank you for the rec @robert_tres!

Photos from last night’s guest lecture + workshop on “Mapping Memory” with the MFA Transformation Design class at Pratt Institute.

Students were invited to sketch, write and share their own experiences onto world, U.S., NYC borough maps, turning the exercise into a collective story.

We used direct quotes of resident interviews from The Dear Neighbor Project to collectively discuss the themes of change and its impact on communities.

Thank you to @caroleematt the MFA students and Pratt faculty especially for your openness and curiosity. It was an honor to guest lecture
