The story of Shell Space and how it all began almost 2 years ago!

Thank you to everyone who has been a part of this journey. You all know who you are. I could not have don’t this without you. ♥️

Thank you to everyone who has run events, created inside here, laughed, played, made friends, made memories and helped keep this shell alive. I started this space but you gave it soul.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you. 🪨

A huge thank you to my darling @tomohiko__h and my family for all your support, cleaning, painting, everything. I love you.
@sacreflux and Ryan @migraneuse thank you for being there at the very start.

And thank you to my darling studio members who have supported this space and helped work more as a team. I can’t believe I found you all. @chqso @jaz_rhodes @andiceramics @maddiokane @kayleighheydon_studio @luna.mqa @zaharalong @unearthlyentity @bugs.hair

I can’t wait to see what this happens inside and outside of this shell in the year to come.

Thank you @broadsheet_melb @domainreview @domain.com.au for this wonderful feature and studio visit!!!

What an absolute dream for me to be interviewed by @snamg and photographed by @phoebepowellphoto ✨ You really captured so much about my work and hopes for creating a space.

It is almost a year since I saw @shellspace__ for the first time and so this is a very proud moment to soak in. Also for it to be considered ‘a Stevie Nicks Fever Dream’ tickles my heart ⚡️

J o y ~ part 2. Pieces I have made whilst questioning what joy is, how it feels and where it shows up. I felt joy in buying this table cloth from an Italian market, hoping to use it for a special occasion. I felt joy in making burnt orange candles to match the burnt orange furniture in my new studio because I want to invite warm and loving energy. I’ve recognised that intention for myself. I felt joy in making beside my mum in the studio and rolling clay like sweet pastry - one of my first sensory memories and I felt joy in folding it like bedsheets I used to sculpt when I woke up to create scenes and use all the cosy imagination power I had. I have questioned whether i am ‘doing joy right’ in my life so many times. What a weird question. To feel like you are missing the point of life. But I figured out it is because I was not being my true self. I saw what brought others joy and when that didn’t make me feel anything I wondered on what was wrong with me. Joy is mine for the making wherever gratitude lies and I have much to be grateful for. If Joy part 1 was the anticipation, setting the table so to speak… joy part 2 is the end of dinner, where full hearts and full bellies lead to playful napkin folding, dancing and a freeness of expectation. In making these pieces I had no expectation. In sculpting these pieces, joy was all in the process and I learnt how I love to play again.

Oracles in my sketchbook…

a fine pink ink pen gave me these musings.
I never plan my drawings, they happen in the moment.
These figures seem to know something before I do, so I like to look back at their messages and soak up their sassy wisdom.

They honestly want to come out more and more so I hope to let them take up more space in my practice. Give them a larger canvas to speak with, more colours to feel with and perhaps then I will have birthed their full message to the world. by @hilarygreen__

This ‘Rock Spirit’ Vessel is actually, in my opinion, one of the best pieces I have ever made.

Created earlier in the year for our MDW Exhibition ‘The Grotto’ with @spiraro__ , this piece was created from moulds of two rocks at significant places to me.

I burnt seaweed collected from the same place and created a special ash glaze to coat them with. Intended as a loving tribute to place and memory. They are not rocks, but imprints of them at a time before they eroded. I just find rocks so beautiful, so sacred in an indescribably way and I wanted to bring those forms into homes.

I have kept this piece to admire all year but now it is time to pass her on - I may still change my mind :)

This piece and many others from my recent and past collections will be available in person this weekend

Have discovered fabric paint and want to paint on fabric - as expected… who would wear something I painted on? Perhaps I’ll paint some one off pieces for the Spring POP up next weekend :) by @hilarygreen__

A clip from our latest podcast episode, ‘Orbiting Your Purpose’ where we discuss how the word ‘purpose’ shows up in our lives.

What is ‘purpose’? How do we find our purpose? Is that even the right question?

This one was close to our hearts…

I have decided to write a letter to send with each Oracle sculpture I make. I found this beautiful petal infused paper and honey like wax from @zettaflorence and felt it was perfect for my Honey sculptures. Even the little wax beads look like honeycomb 🍯

I love that whoever receives each piece will also get to break the seal and feel the intention I hope to pass on.

I create one off pieces and so I want to send them with care and love.

When I slow down, I also remember how grateful I am that anyone connects with what I create. Honestly, thinking back to when I began sculpting, I had no idea anyone would connect with what I do. So I never want to forget that marvellous exchange that we have, even if I don’t meet you in person, it is a wonderful connection we have - made from earth.

Thank you again to everyone who has bought a piece and supported my art.. the response to this collection has blown me away . You are the honey in my life also and I could not do it with out you.

Pearl Hive Vessel
One of the largest pieces in my new collection ‘Honey’.

Every time I sculpt a vase, I think about how this form has been used for thousands of years. Two handles for our two hands …and I think about how we began to tell stories on the surface of things we create.

Each time I sculpt a vessel, I feel like I am adding to this long history of using vessels to hold new meaning. Every vessel shapes a new story and shows how change is constant.

On the surface of this piece I created a complex pattern. I rolled clay into a long thin coil and then, like unfurling ribbon, I let it twist and curl whichever way it chose to layer into a pile. I flattened it with my palm and attached it to the belly of this piece.

There is an energy to it that I felt was like a hive of bees. Like the hum of many flight paths … the organised chaos or nature.

I like the word ‘hive’ because it implies a connection to community that is all working together. I also think of an internal hive, a busyness of thoughts and experiences all trying to find their place.

This piece acknowledges the hive like energy we all hold inside. She is not the hive, but she has a peaceful balance and can access and control that energy as she pleases.
