I’m ecstatic to share my latest publication titled, “Evanescence of Voices: The Preservation of Women of Disorderly Houses in Cumberland County, New Jersey, 1879-1890.” I enjoyed combining my history background with my current archival studies!

These photographs were taken by Ernest J. Bellocq around 1912. The photographs include sex workers of the red light district, Storyville, in New Orleans with their pets. The images are part of a larger collection of Bellocq’s photographs of sex workers. Bellocq was born in New Orleans in 1873 and was a commercial photographer. His glass plate negatives of the Storyville sex workers came to light after his death in 1949. They changed owners and were not printed until 1967, when Lee Friedlander acquired them.

I recently traveled to New Orleans for an archivist conference; while there I visited several museums. My favorite museum was the @nolastoryville. The organization did an amazing job building the world in which the red light district formed in and existed in, using immersive exhibits that involved touch, sound, and smell.

This photograph postcard of Lizzie, was taken at The Palace Studios, where people could dress up and pose in front of different themed backgrounds. The photographs were made into postcards that the public could send to loved ones. The Palace Studios opened in March of 1922 at 1235 Boardwalk in Atlantic City, NJ. It was owned by the firm, Atlantic Foto Services, that formed on March 1st 1919. They were located at 173 S. Kentucky Avenue and owned by Charles B. Brown and Abe Weintraub, who had purchased the business and equipment that had once belonged to Harper B. Smith who had died in August of 1917. After Smith’s death, prior to his company being purchased by Brown and Weintraub, Smith’s wife, Lillian Smith, took over the business and submitted her own photography to the press, keeping the business active for a year and a half.

Imagine going to an exhibit, thinking you’ll see a beautiful mermaid but you end up viewing a monkey’s body sewed to a fish body. That was the reality for many members of the public in 1842 who visited PT Barnum’s exhibit, the Feejee Mermaid.
—
Here is a Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum postcard from 1954, depicting one of the many “mermaid” specimens that existed. The card reads:
“Hi “you all”- Had a wonderful trip down— stopped at this museum Oooo what a place. The weather is great & the crowds of people, Wow! Its really living — See you soon — Brownie & Tom(?)”
“The Dept. of Entomology Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Washington”
—
The Walter Reed Army Medical Center was founded in 1909 and was named after Walter Reed who led the team that confirmed that yellow fever was transmitted through mosquitoes. The medical center remained in operation until 2011.

This postcard depicts a young woman who appears to be bored, lying in bed, facing away from an older man. She has her shoulders exposed, conveying to the viewer that she desires sexual intimacy. The older man next to her is shown fully covered, with him holding the blanket up to his chin. His portrayal informs the viewer that he is uninterested in any kind of sexual encounter and that she is unsatisfied and uninterested in him.
-
When you place a red film over the postcard, an image is revealed of the woman in the nude kissing a younger man. Possibly, it is the woman’s daydream that she is imagining while she stares away from the older man, off into the distance.
—
The postcard is titled “Triste Nuit,” translated to “Bad Night.” It probably dates to around the early 20th-century.
