As we sail towards our 50th anniversary in 2027, Ocean Institute has teamed up with Hoffman California Fabrics to create something truly special: a custom aloha shirt designed exclusively for Ocean Institute!

The Hoffman team visited our campus to photograph the animals, vessels, and landmarks that make Ocean Institute unique. Longtime Hoffman artist Hue Nguyen transformed those images into a one of a kind pattern featuring the historic Spirit of Dana Point, R/V Sea Explorer, local marine life, and familiar sights from around our waterfront campus. ⛵🐟

The result is more than an aloha shirt. It is a wearable celebration of nearly five decades of using the ocean as our classroom and inspiring generations of students, families, and visitors.

This collaboration also brings together two legacies deeply rooted in Southern California’s ocean culture. Hoffman California Fabrics has a rich history in surfing and coastal design, making this partnership an especially meaningful way to celebrate the people, programs, and place that have shaped Ocean Institute for generations.

Soda ash is applied to the wet dyed fabric to help set the dyes, deepen the colors, and bring the beautiful batik patterns to life.

The Aloha Shirt was introduced to California by Walter Hoffman of @hoffmanfabrics in the 1950s. I was blessed to work with him and the crew back in the 90s - designing stacks of prints for @quiksilver…and will never forget the knowledge he passed on to me of the importance of storytelling.

When we started Distant Local, we spoke of turning our maps into Alohas and with the help of Alison and the crew we were able to create this San Diego “Stay Glassy” version. I think Walter would approve. We miss you…but your stories will live on forever. ❤️
