The garden is getting quiet now, but there’s still tending to do before winter settles in.

In my latest House of Ease story, I’m sharing how I prepare my raised beds for the long season ahead — what I pull, what I leave, how I feed the soil, and why I’ve learned not to strip the garden bare.

There’s faith in putting a garden to bed: care for what remains, return something to the earth, and trust the life still working beneath the cold soil.

Before I ever knew the names of the herbs, the women in my family knew what they were for. What to plant. What to steep. What to save. What to reach for when somebody needed tending.

That kind of knowing travels.

Hand to hand.
Woman to woman.
Garden to garden.

So when I work this soil, I know I’m not starting from scratch. I’m carrying something forward.

My babies are home with colds, so you already know what time it is — I went straight to the garden.

I gathered tulsi I grew myself, berry mint, and lemon, then brought it all inside to steep with a little honey. Somehow herbs grown from my garden are the best cure: tea warm on the stove, little feet in the house, and the soul the garden was kind enough to give you. Don’t forget to make it all with love.

Tulsi, also called holy basil, has a long history in herbal traditions and contains antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds. Folks often use it to support stress, digestion, and general immune wellness. Not a cure-all, just a good, grounding cup when everybody needs tending.

Happy birthday to the woman who taught me to be a lady, with the most beautiful soprano voice, the deepest wisdom, the best scratch-made macaroni and cheese & cornbread, the kindest heart, and the strongest mind. She taught me to cook, to decorate for the seasons, garden, and entertain. Without her, there wouldn’t be a House of Ease.

Love you Mama!

Before the frost comes, we gather what the season has given us. We give thanks. We remember the hands that tended the soil, kept the stories, and taught us how to move with the turning year.

Come sit with me in the House of Ease Journal as we explore three autumn equinox rituals rooted in Black and Indigenous traditions—honoring harvest, memory, land, and those who came before.

Garden okra, sweet tomatoes, and crabmeat simmered low and slow. The kind of food that tastes like somebody loved you before you ever knew their story. This is for Grandma Eula, and the Low Country that still lives in us. 🤎

Be sure to watch for an all new episode of House of Ease, I’m giving you a garden tour and passing down some of the gardening secrets my grandma, and my mama gave me.

Ingredients

1 lb fresh okra, sliced
1 tbsp olive oil
1 small onion, diced
1 green bell pepper, diced
2–3 cloves garlic, minced
1–2 tomatoes, chopped (or 1 cup canned, in season)
3 cups low-sodium seafood or chicken broth
1 bay leaf
1 tsp dried thyme
½ tsp smoked paprika
¼ tsp cayenne, optional
1 lb lump crabmeat
Salt and black pepper, to taste
Cooked white rice, for serving
Hot sauce, for the table

1. Sauté the holy trinity

In a large pot, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add onion, bell pepper, and garlic. Cook until soft and fragrant, about 5 minutes.

2. Add the okra and tomatoes

Stir in sliced okra and chopped tomatoes. Cook for 8–10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the okra begins to soften and release its natural thickness.

3. Build the broth

Pour in the broth and add the bay leaf, thyme, paprika, and cayenne, if using. Bring to a gentle simmer and cook for 20–25 minutes, until the okra is tender and the flavors have melded.

4. Add the crabmeat

Gently fold in the lump crabmeat and simmer for 5 minutes. Season with salt and black pepper to taste. Be gentle so the crab stays chunky.

5. Serve and remember

Ladle over hot white rice. Add a dash of hot sauce if you like. Gather your people and give thanks.

September is for collecting flowers you’ve grown in your garden all summer long. I grew 100% of what you see in that vase, going to take a second to pat myself on the back. This was my first year growing flowers — I’m a fruit and veggies gardener. But looks like we’ve unlocked a new alchemy this summer.

Flowers shown: Autumn Beauty Sunflowers, Creeping Jenny, Cosmos, Lamb’s Ear flower, Eucalyptus, catmint, yarrow, English Lavender.

It’s been a beautiful summer. Am I the only one feeling fall creeping in? In the crisp mornings and breezy nights, in the gold peeking through the leaves and the pumpkins suddenly on a growth spurt.

I love fall, but I definitely miss my babies gardening with me in the summer. Time to plant lettuce, broccoli, collards and carrots. Have you begun to plant for fall?

Maybe inheritance is also the inexplicable pull to grow something your grandmother would have recognized.

My grandma Eula was from the South Carolina Lowcountry, and my grandma Queen Esther was born in North Carolina farmland, both where the garden was food, remedy, ritual and inheritance.

Sorrel and ginger have long felt like part of that inheritance for me, and now I grow them with my own hands. Every year as the weather turns, they find their way into my Sorrel Fire Cider. My tried-and-true blend of tart sorrel, fresh ginger, citrus, garlic, herbs, warming spices and apple cider vinegar, steeped low and slow.

It’s one of those recipes I know by feel now. A little more ginger here, another handful of sorrel there. The kind of thing made less by measurement and more by memory, and feeling. Please take this recipe and make it your own, the cooties are coming! Lol.

And maybe I’m not recreating Eula or Queen Esther’s garden, maybe I’m just continuing the legacy. That’s the work.

It’s tiiiiiiii-iiime (in my Mariah Carey voice)! Yes! I’m a big fan of fall and the chilly night temperatures mean that the Autumnal Equinox is on its way!

Over the weekend we celebrated my baby girl Gaia’s birthday, and our community showed up in a big way! It’s inspired me to throw some fall fêtes for the adults in our lives, smoky mezcal apple cider included!

In spirit of the soon-to-be change in seasons, I’ve changed my florals to a combination of sedum for my thrillers, chrysanthemums for my fillers, and gorgeous ornamental cabbage for my spiller. What do you think y’all? Are you ready for fall?
