The Grand Dame of New Zealand. Luxury with humble origins 🎣

Just upstream from the roar of Huka Falls is @hukalodge. Here however, you hear nothing. Nothing but the occasional splash of a trout breaching the emerald-blue waters of the Waikato, or the cackles of the native Tūī as they flutter across the deck. Kiwi luxury really is unmatched.

Al fresco breakfast on the terrace includes eggs prepared precisely to your liking, bacon, tomatoes, mushrooms and greens picked fresh from the garden. Juice squeezed that morning, tea by the pot, and the Waikato River flowing beside you the whole time.

Huka Lodge has been named No.82 in The World’s 50 Best Hotels 2026 extended 51-100 list for the second consecutive year.

Showcasing the best architecture and design from Australia, New Zealand and the United States, the Local Project anthology takes a look at Christian Anderson Architects’ work at the recently reimagined, century-young Huka Lodge.

The measure of success of the extensive work across architecturural design, the interiors and the grounds is that returning guests cannot pick where the old lodge ends and the new features begin. @christianandersonarchitects carried the original lines through the new buid, @virginia_fisher_design layered warmth and heritage into the interiors, and @suzanneturleylandscapes connected the new buildings to the extensive, parklike grounds as though they had always been there.
