I care about lineage more than most people do, and I still think we argue about it way too much.

Parents don’t walk into my school asking who taught my teacher. They want to know if their kids are going to grow, and that question keeps me honest.

So where do you land? Are traditional martial artists the biggest haters, or are we just the loudest ones online?

If you want to see what I think does matter, my free guide on keeping kung fu martial is in my bio. It covers my Sifu’s principles for taking forms into real fighting, and it’s a good taste of how we train in Shaolin Hung Fut Kung Fu.

伏門虎 Crouching Tiger at the Gate looks great in the form. The real question is whether it holds up when someone swings back.

This technique comes from Lin Wan Kau Da Kuen (連環扣打拳), the Continuous Block and Attack Fist.

This time I added a pad drill between the application and the modification, because that’s where a technique actually gets built before you ever take it into sparring.

📘 I also put together a free guide called Keeping Kung Fu Martial. It covers Sifu Tai Yim’s principles and the steps I use to take a technique out of the form and into fighting.

Be honest: do your form techniques ever get drilled on pads, or do they only live in the form?

Every Hung Fut student eventually has to answer this one: are you the old tiger or the young tiger?
鴛鴦虎拳, the Double Tiger, came to America with Sifu Tai Yim, passed down from his teacher, 7th Generation Grandmaster Hung Yiu Chung. Swipe through for the story behind the form, and stay for the footage of Sifu playing it.

Which tiger are you? Tell us in the comments.

If a kung fu fighter and an MMA fighter stepped into the cage tomorrow, who would you put your money on?

Most people already have their answer before they even watch. Hear me out first, and then tell me if anything changed.

Who are you picking, and why? Drop it in the comments.

Heaven-Piercing Punch into a Double Binding Elbow, from our Small Five Animals form.

The first move is 通天鎚 Tung Tin Cheui, the Heaven-Piercing Punch. It sets up 雙束踭 Seung Chuk Jaang, the Double Binding Elbow, which is one of Hung Fut’s 14 elbows. Both come from Siu Ng Ying (小五形), our Small Five Animals form. Unlike the five animals in Hung Gar, ours are Tiger, Crane, Leopard, Horse and Monkey. In total, our style has 10 animals.

After the uppercut, you grab the person and drive them into your elbow. That binding is where the name comes from. In gloves you can’t really grab someone’s clothing and tie them up, so the modification is what we train.

Most kung fu tournaments don’t allow elbows. Should they?

Every time a kung fu student bows or ties their sash, they’re carrying something forward. Most people never learn what it means.

Which one did you already know?

Kung fu means a skill you earned through hard work over a long time. So how did it become the name for the whole martial art?

The actual Chinese word for martial arts is 武術, wushu in Mandarin or mo seut in Cantonese. Even so, almost everyone who trains still says kung fu.

Should we keep calling it kung fu, or start saying wushu? Tell me where you land.

It looks simple in the form. It gets a lot less simple once somebody’s hitting back.

走馬連環掌, Jau Ma Lin Wan Jeung. Running Horse Continuous Palm, from Hung Fut’s eagle style.

Palm or fist to the head in a real fight? You have to pick one.

Kung fu doesn’t mean martial arts. A chef can have kung fu. So can a calligrapher.

Every one of these words has its own history, and mixing them up hides a lot of it. Swipe through and tell me which one you’ve been using wrong.

Internal or external: is there a real difference once someone’s swinging at you?

Hundreds of styles. No shared standard. Nobody in charge. That’s the problem, and it’s also what makes Kung Fu worth fighting for.

What’s one thing every style should agree on? Tell me below.

Every form has a few things you’d never do in a tournament. This is one of them, and here’s how we still train it.

白鶴爭珠, White Crane Contests for the Pearl. It comes from Dai Ng Ying Kuen (大五形拳), our Big Five Animal Fist, where it’s written 左右, left and right, so you drill it on both sides.

The application is the reason the technique exists. The modification is how you get enough real reps with it that it’s there when you need it.

Which would you trust in a fight: the version you’ve done a thousand times in the form, or the one you’ve done a hundred times against resistance?

Kung fu doesn’t stop when class ends. In the old martial world, a lot of the teaching happened at the dinner table, in where you sat, how you poured the tea, and who ate first. Swipe through and see how many of these you already knew.

What’s one table rule your teacher drilled into you?
