There will be a long and vulnerable post in the future about all of this, I promise. However, I’m still searching for the proper words to express my level of gratitude and excitement for this opportunity and the privilege to do this very important work. Throughout the course of this year, we’ve been working to complete a big commission for @ava and her @leapaction project. LEAP is dedicated to empowering activists as they pursue narrative change around the police abuse of Black People. LEAP’s mission is to disrupt the code of silence that exists around police aggression and misconduct and to elevate activist storytelling around police brutality and murder. Our billboard, “How Many Weren’t Filmed?” which is one installment of the project is up in LA on the corner of Sunset & LaBrea! It will be up until the first week of December. If you happened to be in LA, swing by and check it out. More about the project will be announced very very soon. As of now, I’m speechless. I’m proud. My latest print “Get Home Safe” is part of @sohohouse’s Soho Editions Collection, brought to you by the winner and runners-up of the Soho House Art Prize 2020 with Bombay Sapphire.“Get Home Safe” is quite different from any other print I’ve created. The abstract was originally created as an acrylic on paper work in my studio, then digitized and produced as a large scale inkjet print. The hand type I created in my signature process of analog to digital, then it was burned for a screen print overtop. All finished with a varnish overlay to bring out the details and texture. The Vulnerability Report: DWELLWhat do you do with grief? What do you do with pain? What do you do with trauma? Intergenerational trauma. Internal trauma. Loneliness. Confusion. This feeling that you’ve been in a lions den your whole life, fighting wild beasts that were planted. Where’s the equilibrium for healing and hurting at the same time? What’s the recipe for releasing the weight and figuring out how to carry new weight? Happy weight. How many times can you fight bouts of depression and come out on the other side? I don’t really know. I spent my whole life trying to figure out my emotions, living out my vulnerabilities publicly. But for some odd reason this interview feels the most exposed I’ve ever been. It’s fascinating what can happen when you place an X-Ray on the truth and you realize how much shit under there doesn’t technically belong to you, but once you’ve been exposed to it, you don’t want it to contaminate your life anymore. That’s the moment that you set yourself free. And maybe. Just maybe. When you’re at your deepest point, your darkest moment and you feel like you’re drowning you find the courage to throw yourself your own life jacket.
