Our first event @project17.ng in New York, centered on ‘African climate stories’, during Climate Week and UNGA81 week.

And somehow, what started 10 years ago is beginning to make so much sense @sonia_nelson .

The room was filled with incredible people passionate about telling African climate stories, exchanging ideas, and developing solutions to some of the world’s most pressing challenges. It was a beautiful reminder that the work we started years ago is growing into something much bigger than we imagined.

After the event, @dzennypha_ and I found ourselves reminiscing about our UNGA journey, how young we were 8 years ago, showing up in rooms that challenged us and ultimately helped shape who we are today.

I’m amazed by how far we’ve come. Grateful for the journey, proud of the work, and so excited for what’s ahead.

Here’s to the next chapterand to continuing to create spaces where African voices, stories, and solutions are heard.

Join Project 17 at Climate Week NYC on Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2026!

If you’ll be in New York during Climate Week, come join Project 17 for an interactive workshop exploring who gets to tell Africa’s climate story and ways to tell it.

Rather than a traditional panel, this creative gathering will bring together African literature and lived experiences to explore how storytelling can reshape climate narratives and support environmental education. Expect a mix of conversation, learning, creativity, and connection, with authors, climate leaders, and educators helping us think differently about how Africa’s climate story is told.

📍 Oyster Classroom, Pier 57, 25 11th Ave, New York, NY 10011
I’d love to see you there, connect, and share this experience together! by @ibiyinxcs

UMD Commencement Ceremony 2026 (Fall 2025 Class) 🎓

I remember coming to the U.S. for my Master’s program with one dream in mind, earning a PhD. From the uncertainty of applying to programs during the pandemic to receiving my offer from UMD on my birthday in 2021, something just felt right. It made the decision so much easier.

Looking back now, was I right in my decision? Absolutely, YESSS! 🥹

Not only did I earn my PhD, but I also received over 10 awards and fellowships, secured grants for my own personal projects, traveled internationally fully funded, and carried out an international dissertation project, a dream I shared with my advisor on my very first day of school. I also had the opportunity to live in one of the most beautiful countries in East Africa and, along the way, made lifelong friends.

Grace truly found me ❤️

I am incredibly grateful to God, and deeply thankful for my advisor, who stood by me every step of the way. Through every worry, tears, uncertainty, and mistake, she listened, encouraged, and never judged, only pushed me toward the finish line. Dr. Amy Sapkota is truly everyone’s dream advisor.

The University of Maryland was so good to me, and I will forever be a Terp 😌🐢❤️💛
