Last month,
I started working on a recycling business that had never even claimed their profile

They said, "We've been in business since 1987. Everyone knows we are here. We don't need that."

I said, " What if I told you, optimizing your profile will get you more business."

They decided to hire me!
In only 4 weeks, they tripled their electronic waste collection!!!

They are so happy they took a chance and saw the results!

If you have a business, especially one that depends on local foot traffic, creating and optimizing your Google business is definitely a must 🤩

It’s a Saturday in March of 2023, and I’m at the park for a friend’s party.

The food is set out on a table in the shade. It’s getting cold, and a white layer of grease is forming on top.

Something needs to be done.

I look around and spot a burner and a propane tank.

I tell a guest,
“Hey help me, turn on the burner,” then another guest, “Hand me that spoon, and the tortillas.”

Just like that, I'm warming up food and serving it to guests, watching them enjoy it.

That night, I tell my sister about the good deed I did, and she says,

“Wow, if someone did that at my party, I would be offended.”

Wait, what? All I wanted to do was help.

But my sister’s comment makes me replay what I did. I never stopped to ask if it was okay. Taking charge came so naturally to me that I didn’t even notice I was doing it.

Now, feeling embarrassed, I start thinking about all the times I might have bothered someone by taking charge, and one client comes to mind.

In February 2021, I took over the account of a client who owns a venue.

I went to visit him.

I find him sitting at a table in the empty venue, resting his head in one hand.

“I need your help. I really need you to do something. My business is very slow.”

I know something needs to be done.

I plant my elbow on the table.

“Look.” I pause. “I can help you. I can advertise for you. I can get you business.

But if you really want to grow, I mean really want to grow, you need to do everything I tell you to do.”

You need to:

* Get reviews
* Send me new pictures every week
* Respond to every single review
* Reply to requests for a quote every day
* Return all missed calls

He did everything I asked him to do!

He was my client for over five years, and I helped him grow his business to the point where he booked his venue year after year and even opened a second location.

He’s always been grateful and would even call me and say,

“Thank you for telling me what to do. I really appreciate you.”

After my sister’s comment, I thought I needed to stop taking charge.

Remembering my client made me realize
I need to stop and notice whether it’s well received or not.

In May 2026, I started writing a story I couldn’t let go of.

I knew I had learned something. I just couldn’t find the words to explain it.

Every time I asked someone to read it, they weren’t getting what I was trying to say. So I turned to ChatGPT to help me unravel it.

Every night, and during the day whenever I had a chance, I opened ChatGPT and went back to the same thread.

“What about this?”

“What about that?”

I would start with one idea and end up exploring another.

I even brought it up to Sun.

“You gotta stop overthinking about it,” he said.

But I went back to the same thread.

“Okay, but what if I say it this way?”

After weeks of going back and forth, on July 22, ChatGPT told me:

“Stop digging for a new lesson and start refining this one.”

It felt like even ChatGPT had had it.

“That’s okay. I’m just an overthinker. That’s just how I am.”

So I kept going.

I did finish that assignment. It became one of my best pieces, but also one of the hardest to finish.

Now, writing this, I realize why.

I didn’t want it to be done.

Being an overthinker gave me a reason to keep working on something I already felt good about. It protected me from having to start a new story from scratch.

“What if I couldn’t find another idea I liked as much?”

I liked this topic. I enjoyed making this story better. I was savoring it.

Without that fear, I would still enjoy making my ideas better. But I would finish them, trusting that another idea will come.

I would stop using one more change as a reason to keep a project unfinished.

Okay, now this story is ready.

“But what about the design? What about the picture? Which song should I use?”

There I go again.

Forget it. This is a good post for now.

Last July, our company launched a new print magazine.

As I thought about who might benefit from it, Mike immediately came to mind.

Then I remembered...

Years earlier, Mike had told me he'd never buy print advertising again.

So, trying to be a good listener, I never brought it up again.

Until that day.
I decided to ask him the same question.

And guess what?

He said yes.

That's when I realized I'd stopped listening the moment I stopped asking.

Good salespeople listen.

Great salespeople ask the same question because they don't assume the answer stays the same.

What's something you've changed your mind about?

The Award I’ve Held On To All These Years.

In sixth grade, I was voted
“Best Personality.”

I was shocked.
I remember thinking:

“Well, at least I have a good personality.” 😂

As I got older, people would tell me their whole life story.

My kids would see me talking to someone and ask:

“Was that your friend?”

“No, I just met them.”

Talking to people always felt like we had been friends forever.

Years later, while I was working at a Boys & Girls Club, I told a mother all about her daughter’s day.

She listened quietly and then said:

“You would be good at sales. Come work for me.”

Her name was Deborah Clancy, and she was a Regional Sales Manager at PennySaver.

I knew nothing about advertising or sales, but I took the job.

That first year, I cold called, knocked on doors, and won Rookie of the Year.

As I gained more clients, I started noticing things beyond the ads.

One dental client was getting calls from people asking:
“How much is a root canal?”
The receptionist would say:

“We can’t give prices over the phone.”

And the calls would end.

The advertising was working, but something was getting lost in that first conversation.

So I helped the office change the way they answered and they closed more business.

That became a pattern.
I trained staff, wrote phone scripts and voicemails, and paid closer attention to where businesses could lose a customer.

Looking back, I thought being good with people was just part of my personality.

I didn’t realize how much I would use it in sales and in helping my clients turn more leads into customers.
