I get asked this question All the Time about psychotherapy: “HOW EXACTLY DOES TALKING ABOUT MY ISSUES AND FEELINGS HELP?”🤔 Well, I’m so glad you asked because this reel’s for you! 😉 Our thoughts and feelings trap us into doing things and not doing things. They guard us, protect us, restrict us, and mislead us into believing that all our thoughts are true. Self-understanding is truly the step to Inner Peace. It doesn’t mean you won’t experience conflicts but you will have clarity on where you stand and why you feel the way you do. Talk Therapy is a path to that self-understanding. 🤍Kiersty Follow along for more thoughtful wellness content @ikarus_mind Want to start your self-discovery journey? Therapy becomes more effective when you recognize, identify and overcome your resistance to change. Understanding that resistance means understanding your fears, insecurities and limiting beliefs that stop you from taking those next steps. Want to understand this more? Let’s get in touch. Instead of fighting, holding back or suppressing your emotions what if you validated them within yourself? What would that look and sound like? What might you discover about yourself if you found a healthy way to express your sadness and grief? What if we could give our emotions, sadness, grief or tears a voice? Want to talk? No means no. Education around consent has to be part of a prevention strategy. It’s crucial to understand what yes to seggs actually means. Whether you’re casually dating, in a long-term relationship or married, the same rule of consent applies. Because the right to your body is never forfeited no matter what your relationship status is. Remember: ❗️You can consent to one activity and not consent to another. ❗️You can withdraw consent at any time ❗️Consent is an on-going process. Speak up in the moment if you change your mind. Your boundaries have a right to be respected, that’s what healthy relationships are built on. Education is the starting point. Changing culture requires changing what we understand, what we normalize, and what we teach the next generation. Here’s a taste of what my upcoming Relationship Trivia Gameshow will be like in Toronto on Sunday Sept 27! 😍 This interview was interesting bc it revealed that despite having unresolved problems, couples can still either be happy together or unhappy. Erica made a great point that many couples have unresolved issues due to poor communication skills. Sweeping things under the rug is a very common practice for people who are conflict avoidant. As a psychotherapist, I see ppl sweep things under the rug bc they want to maintain a superficial level of happiness. While this strategy can achieve surface level harmony, their discomfort or anxiety builds up inside. According to the Gottman Institute, there’s a distinction between Solvable vs Perpetual problems (unresolved) and the important piece is establishing effective ongoing dialogue about these perpetual problems so the couple can navigate their differences. Without proper communication and dialogue, these unresolved problems can turn into gridlocked issues and this is when the quality of the relationship can really take a hit. Codependency can mask itself as ‘the things people do for love’ but it’s important to recognize the signs. Feeling like you’re losing your identity while being in a relationship is a huge sign. Feeling like you don’t know who you are without that person is another big sign. When you prioritize your personal growth & emotional resilience, and when you have a healthy self-identity and know how to protect it while still being open and flexible, you’ll see how different a healthy loving relationship can be.
