Last week, I had the opportunity to attend the Global Fashion Summit organized by the @globalfashionagenda in Copenhagen, Denmark.

I was one of the 8 members of the Next Gen Assembly charged with bringing a youth perspective to the summit.

The theme of the summit was “Ambition to Action”: how fashion sustainability can move from just discourse to tangible actions. Some of my takeaways from the program were:

✅Collaboration is needed to achieve a net positive impact in the industry. There’s no need to replicate systems when we can all collaborate to make existing systems geared toward sustainability work.

✅The conversation needs to be more inclusive: Fashion isn’t just a Western phenomenon, hence, there needs to be more representation of different cultures across the globe.

✅Although governmental policies are important to achieving sustainability goals, we can’t afford to wait for policies. Everyone has to do what they can in their capacity.

One of the sessions that really spoke to me is the session on textile waste in Ghana by @theorispresent . I also loved @josephine__philips point on degrowth during her session. The term degrowth and how it’s often misconstrued is something the Next Gen members and I were grappling with just before the summit, so I loved Josephine’s point on de-growing unsustainable practices and growing sustainable ones.

⭐️As the only African (which I consider an immense privilege) among the NextGen Assembly, I would like to make a call to you my fellow Africans:

It is crucial for us to actively participate in the conversation. We face underrepresentation and are among the most impacted by the fast fashion crises.

To have a voice in decision-making, we must take action to mitigate the effects of these crises, raise awareness, and make a significant impact. By doing so, we can garner attention and opportunities to be included at the tables where change is shaped.

From La Sape’s legacy of elegance and dignity in DR Congo, to the intricate raffia-based Dida cloth traditions of Côte d’Ivoire, these looks remind us that fashion is also a cultural archive.

Cultural sustainability is not about freezing tradition in time. It is about ensuring that heritage, skills, and meaning continue to evolve, remain visible, and stay relevant in the present.

When we expand sustainability beyond the environmental lens, we begin to see fashion differently, not just as what we wear, but as what we remember, carry, and continue. by @ike0luwa

I’ve come a long way from just sewing clothes.

Recently, it dawned on me just how far I’ve come from the girl who started learning how to sew in 2015.

That girl who simply loved clothes has grown in so many ways. In some ways, I’m still consciously trying to catch up with myself.

Fashion has given me so much. It’s still what I do, and it will always be a part of my story. But somewhere along the way, I realized I’ve become more than the work I create.

I’ve gathered lessons, experiences, perspectives, questions, and reflections that have shaped me just as much as fashion has.

If you’ve been here, thank you for rocking with me through every phase. Your support has meant more than you know.

Now, we are switching gears. I’m still your fashion girly but with a lot more depth and wisdom to offer @metamorpheousis.

I’m excited to see how this new expression of me unfolds, and I’d love for you to come along for the ride. by @ike0luwa
