The World Cup arrival fits of DR Congo and Côte d’Ivoire offer a lens into how fashion carries identity, preserves craftsmanship, and tells stories that move across generations. From La Sape’s legacy of elegance and dignity in DR Congo, to the intricate raffia-based Dida cloth traditions of Côte d’Ivoire, these looks remind us that fashion is also a cultural archive. Cultural sustainability is not about freezing tradition in time. It is about ensuring that heritage, skills, and meaning continue to evolve, remain visible, and stay relevant in the present. When we expand sustainability beyond the environmental lens, we begin to see fashion differently, not just as what we wear, but as what we remember, carry, and continue.

Patchwork is not a modern sustainability innovation. The Nama people of Namibia historically wore garments made from patchwork. This demonstrates resourcefulness and craftsmanship long before sustainability and circularity became a global fashion conversation. Many principles now associated with circular fashion already existed in traditional clothing systems. What other modern day fashion practices existed before now? #theupnetwork #namibianfashion #circularfashion

Last weekend at the Sustainable Fashion Foundations Fellowship, we deep-dived into Cultural Storytelling. The session was led by Ms. Nifemi Adeleye @becomingnif Our facilitator emphasized that storytelling is not just about communication, it is about how we: 📌 Understand culture 📌 Translate meaning 📌 Position our work in the world Because what separates a product from a brand is not just design or quality, it is clarity. And perhaps, what holds African fashion back is not a lack of creativity, but how deeply we engage with our own cultural systems. This session was a reminder that fashion is not just about what we make, but what we make meaningful. Which of these insights do you most resonate with? . #sustainablefashionfoundationsfellowship #theupnetwork #theupnetworkco #sustainablefashioninafrica #sustainablefashioninnigeria

Here are our key takeaways from the first expert session of the Sustainable Fashion Foundations Fellowship. The session was facilitated by @ike0luwa In this session, we examined both African and global fashion histories to understand where the industry is coming from, and where it might be going. One insight that stood out to us: fashion doesn’t only refer to clothing. Fashion is the change in dress and trends over time, and it can apply to many aspects of culture and society. Understanding fashion history helps us see how culture, sustainability, and industry systems have evolved. Which of the takeaways resonates with you the most?
