A month ago I faced the biggest sudden issue with Paceracer yet. The specialist who has applied the graphic artwork to every single watch dial over the last 7 years is very sadly no longer able to work.

Everything pretty much came to a halt, knowing he was the only person in NZ/AUS willing to work on dials at volumes of just 1–5. After sending quote requests I’ve still been declined by others.

After some pretty desperate weeks reaching out to industrial machine suppliers across Aus & Europe, all well beyond budget, someone in NZ heard me. Even though they had declined the work themselves, they gave me a lead to a potential machine that had been in storage since a business closed 5 years ago.

I seriously didn’t know quite what to do because of budget but this was the only option & I’ve ended up with an industrial machine sitting in my workshop not knowing it’s condition would work. I’m very grateful, but it’s still completely unknown if it will work. It wasn’t free & they didn’t know if it worked.

This video is me turning it on for the very first time, testing if the pneumatics & electronics will move correctly, after nearly 5 hours of cleaning it top to bottom, removing surface rust, & re-treating the sliding pneumatic cylinders. It’s so niche that there aren’t even maintenance services for this machinery in NZ.

While it looks straightforward, there’s a huge amount of testing ahead with precision photo etching, ceramics & ink chemistry transfer to find out if this machine can perform at the accuracy a watch dial requires.

Right now I’ve got just 9 printed dials of various watches remaining: 3 Sangfroid, 2 Automatics, 1 Reconnaissance, 1 Pianist & 2 Serendipity.

If anyone wants to talk about a watch, now would be a really helpful time, whether it’s one of these last dials or in supporting the very first dials printed in-house if this works. by @insta_band
