Did you know that I have a free e-book that you can read to make your own predictions for sunrise and sunset? This e-book goes over the basis of all the factors to consider when making a prediction and human interpretation will always rule the roost over automated forecasts.

I go over things like cloud altitude, cloud type, wind direction, humidity, haze and so on.

You can view it in the link in my bio which can be downloaded for free any time. If you do, please make sure you follow my pages here and @sryanbruen so that I know you’re appreciating the effort.

This book forms the base for many of this page’s forecasts.

FIERY SKY ALERT!

A very ripe scenario for south and eastern parts of Ireland this evening on Thursday 15th October 2026 with a well defined front clearance timed for sunset. With clear spells to the west, this gives a high chance of colourful skies.

The west itself will be mainly low cloud mixed with clear spells from scattered showers giving chance of rainbows.

Colourful skies are possible for both sunset on Tuesday 13th October and sunrise on Wednesday 14th October 2026.

For Tuesday’s sunset, an area of high cloud will be over Ireland pushing northeastward with clearance to the WSW which could lead to colour. The thickest cloud over Northern Ireland.

For Wednesday’s sunrise, rain and wind will be approaching from the North Atlantic with high cloud ahead of it which will be covering a lot of the country. The south and southwest coast will probably see low cloud due to the wind direction but almost anywhere could see colour.

Tricky one to tell where the boundary will be where cloud cover will be too thick but there is chances for colour before sunrise on Sunday 11th October 2026 roughly from mid-west to east north. The south coast will be too covered most probably.

Worth a look.

Interesting distribution of cloud this evening for sunset on Saturday 10th October 2026. It will block the WSW horizon for most of us which will make things hazy but some (thinking mainly NW) could come out lucky with some colour in the sky. But low chance.

It’ll be a nice evening for many before it turns hazy though still breezy and chilly. *once there’s no low shower clouds

It’s a case of scattered showers and blustery westerly winds for sunset on Friday 9th October 2026. What this means is colour can happen if you have a clear western horizon whilst the sun is setting if it coincides with a shower. You may also get a bright high rainbow on the eastern horizon.

Alternatively you may not get much colour at all if you get a badly timed shower blocking the horizon or if you have clear spells but the eastern horizon can be pink for a period of time if you see any remaining cumulonimbus clouds decaying.

For your location, radar and satellite watching is key.

Not much to speak of for a large part of the country on Friday morning 9th October 2026. Cloud and rain from today Thursday will continue to clear east and southeastward but this will block the horizon for the eastern part of the country. This will hinder the sunrise significantly for Munster, Leinster and east Ulster that it may take a while to show.

There’s some scattered low to mid level forecast for the northwest which may light up when the sun shows itself.

A mostly cloudy picture to start the day.

Fiery sky chances for the west of Ireland before sunrise on Thursday 8th October 2026. The east of the country is likely to be too clear but a nice cold morning nonetheless - beware of eastern horizon cloud over the sea which is probable.

Hey guys, it’s been a minute. The page is back active. I had a break due to some personal things going on and also I wanted to reflect on my first month of this page which has had its ups and downs. Its hits and misses due to locking in the algorithmic scoring model which needed pics and reports based on forecast to improve its performance so that it can be more accurate.

After giving some thought, I was thinking of discontinuing the scoring model because at least from my point of view, I was not seeing as dramatic an increase in accuracy as I wanted and the summaries were often misleading that it was generating.

So unless you really liked the scoring maps, I will be going back to the old fashioned cloud cover maps for the moment.

On that note, sunset on Wednesday 7th October 2026 looks nice enough. There will be some scattered high cloud expected over the southwest of the country which will aid colour. Most will have clear spells and scattered showers dying away. The wind will also calm but there will be a cold feel in the air.

Sunrise on Tuesday 29th September 2026 is a tricky one. The model forecast is giving a very pessimistic view but I’m not gonna show here as I think it’s misleading. So rather I’m sharing the cloud coverage map from the ECM model which the scoring algorithm is based on.

The horizon clarity is scoring less than 50 meaning only a partly clear eastern horizon. I think this’ll be a nowcast and we’re just going to have to chance our luck with the skies in the morning. They may light up as there will be plentiful high cloud but some low cloud is also expected to be in the mix. The north and east will be worth checking it out. The southwest will have rain knocking on its door.

There was a spectacular sunrise for the east of Ireland on Thursday 24th September 2026 which although the chances of a colourful sunrise were picked up by the forecast model, the extent of it was not. So I have made this small evaluation discussing it briefly.

The sunrise was also a little unusual in some regards. taken in Ireland by @irishskiesforecasts

Very poor prospects for sunset on Monday 28th September 2026 with thick high cloud cover coming from the west and southwest which will block the western horizon. So although golden hour might initially seem promising, it will be hazy with grey light when the sun hits the wall of cloud.
